Tied up so soon? There and back already? I always thought narrowboaters and steam train enthusiasts took their time ........ I had overnight stops at Milton and Cheddleton on the way and got to Consall this morning. So all quite leisurely given that the Caldon is only 17 miles long. I did originally plan to go to Froghall Basin, however, when I got to Consall- one of the few places on the network where I have no mobile phone signal or internet- a text message from my sister had arrived earlier saying my Mum had been taken back into hospital so I did start back today so that I could get back to Cheddleton where I have a phone signal so I could get in the loop. Now I just don't know what to do. Part of me feels I should have carried on back to the mooring when I started heading down the Coventry Canal a few weeks ago and I'm currently minded to head for home now. I'm struggling to focus on the boating with all this uncertainty going on with Mum. So very sorry to hear that. Forgive my facetiousness. Wishing you all well x

I'm struggling to focus on the boating with all this uncertainty going on with Mum. So very sorry to hear that. Forgive my facetiousness. Wishing you all well x Well, there's nothing needing forgiveness, it's all just banter in the grand scheme of things but the situation has developed today. I will dally less on the Caldon than planned because once back on the T&M there will be places to leave the boat and access to public transport should this be needed. I've thought from the word "Go" that this would probably be the end from Mum and I still think that. If it happens, then that's the way of things, she is 87 next month and dying does happen when you are 87. I'd be more shocked if I found out she was pregnant to be honest. The one silver lining is that I've been able to talk frankly and dispassionately with my own children about how I want them to approach my ending when it comes and remind them that they are specifically prohibited from having wreaths of white flowers in the windows of the hearse saying "DAD" and if they disobey me I will come back and haunt them.

Those hearses are terrible.
My old man, who I didn't know all that well, pre-booked his own funeral. Lifelong hater of Rolls Royces he ended up being seen dead in one.
The white flowers were fortunately absent as despite showing his true background by using a bloody roller for the job he did at least possess -some- class.
I like the idea of the acid bath and down the toilet. Other than that I have instructed the children to burn me.
Cheapest option is best as one would prefer any remaining money to go to relatives rather than scum funeral director parasite scumbag scum.

I'm sure you'll make your own plans Mr Stabby but we've used Haywood marina and then buses into Stafford railway station if you're thinking of an overnight visit. It's still your Mum ... you only get one. Hope things work out for the best , whatever that proves to be. Rog

I've told my kids that I just want that thing done where they take your body away in a van and it gets cremated in Aldershot or somesuch without any formal ceremony, then if they do want to mark my passing then they can organise some get-together over a pub lunch at a time and place that suits everybody. I won't be leaving a great deal of money as it is but whatever I do leave has potential to be used more wisely than to further enrich the funeral industry. I think many people fall into the trap of thinking they have to organise a lavish funeral as some type of public demonstration of affection for the deceased but I have explained to them that this is simply emotional blackmail.

Shocked to read that Mr Stabby has never yet visited t'flint mill on all his traversing of one of the loveliest canals on the system ... eta - hope all's well back at base x It is only open two afternoons a week, Monday and Wednesday, and I've never been past it on those days. I knew I'd get to see it one day. No news from home as yet, waiting for my sister to return a call. Then I will decide what to do, whether to turn left or right at Etruria, and then my timings depend on a rendezvous with the fuel boat Bargus.

Good luck with the call - hope it's good news. Say hello to Jason for me - and if Lulu looks like Shorn the Sheep she's wearing the coat I made for her this winter! It's a surprisingly small world out here...

eta - what's he charging for fuel this week? I don't know. I'll let you know when I've filled up but my guess would be around £1.50. Took this photo just three years ago... 52.9p. I reckon it will be £3 a litre this time next year.

eta - what's he charging for fuel this week? Last time I saw Bargus it had a full conversion on it (wooden top) and was some sort of share boat. That's cool if if is back as a Grand Union working motor boat and trading.
