I've often wondered about the practicality of fitting a magnetic clutch pulley to an alternator.
That would be quite a nice thing to have specially if one had a secondary high output alt.

I’m sure it cold be done, but surely much easier just to disconnect the field current supply so that the alternator shuts down.

Yes my experience with magnetic clutches is they are not very reliable.

I had to remove one from someone’s engine because it broke pretty shortly after being fitted. It had been used to engage a pretty big 240v alternator.

I’m fitting a smaller inverter to use in winter by far my biggest drain last year was the victron which is using 2.5amps all the time it’s on. Anyway I have to make up some me leads for the smaller inverter, so the positive and negative leads have to be the same length?

2.5 Amps for All the time it is on sounds pretty good to me. That’s the standby current with no load. My old pure sine wave 1600w draws less than an amp on standby.

My prosine 1800 uses around 1.5 watts on standby.
I did see a Victron 1600 combi by the bins the other day. I wonder why it was ditched. Could be as simple as no longer on mains power. Probably should have taken it really..
Heavy bugger so probably a lot of copper in it. Hmm. Silly boy.

Must be a big Victron mine is about 0.25amp Maybe a decimal point error as 2.5a does sound a lot. That would be 50ah+ over 24h. Shocking for something which is doing nothing !! My daily power usage is less than that on the country estate boat but then it is a bit of a shed.

Must be a big Victron mine is about 0.25amp 12v 3000w I have always wondered if it has a fault. But my bmv says 2.5amps current draw at standby.

Yes the fan is a nuisance on mine too. I guess the therm-wotsit thingy might be rather a conservative item.
Ex ambulance. It's a Statpower not a Xantrex..
I remember Gibbo on the other side mentioning they were good and he seemed to know his shit. Chris Gibson the Smartgauge man.

I’ve just checked again and it’s more like 2.1amps at standby. But still quite a lot. I know my other inverter takes much less.

The Prosine has two standby modes. One uses less power. I'm not sure what the difference is but there is one. Maybe the victron is set up as if it were connected to the mains in which case consumption would not matter.
I seem to recall they have a boost function for use if you are on a 6a shore power supply and need more current..

I do like Xantrex stuff, the name is just so futuristic. I reckon anything starting with a V or an X has got to be good shit. Its an interesting theory. STATPOWER does it for me. Good combination of vowels and consonants.
