I am considering forgetting about this forum. Sick of the name calling and arguing. No valuable contributions from the majority of members. The usual idiots spoiling it for everyone else. The sooner it dies the better. If you feel like that, the answer is to just bugger off & never darken the doors again.Wishing it would die is just plain nasty to other members. If you bugger off,the forum would be of no interest to you would it ? So,just leave would be my answer & those of us who wish to remain can do so.

I was just wondering what the etiquette for welcoming newbies to the thunderboat is. TDโs newbie welcome! ๐

Isn't 'Isambard Kingdom Brunel' the chap who threatened to seek out members of Canalworld and beat them up?

I did say @rusty69 that I have friends who have boats who visit none of the forums. I chat to them for technical advice. Rog Oh right sorry. I didn't realise I actually had to read your replies. For when you're stuck for another variation...

To be fair, this forum did probably save my life not so long ago. Itโs not all bad. That's a shocker ianaliย A friend of mine lost a good friend to suicide several years ago. He felt massively guilty that he didn't know what his friend was going through. Since then he's been busy,ย successfullyย setting up Men's Social groups based around talking and training through gymwork and boxing ... he feels that being able to talk is a life saver , and coupled with proven positive effects of exercise is important for mental health. Rog Ah. I guess I should have added a ๐ to my post. I was talking about the chicken thread, when I asked how long it is before chicken goes off.. Didnโt mean to make light of suicide though!

Have to say @rusty69 as you raised the spectre, I have visited the thread on CWDF
If they think folks are handled roughly over there, there's no wonder most choose to just read here and not post.

There are those here who will always try to be helpful, but asking and answering technical questions on forums is extremely problematic and unlikely to yield positive results. Rog That's a bit much coming from you, Alice. On your own admission you know little to nothing with regard to anything remotely technical - be it either subject matter relating to the structural, repair or engineering aspects of boats and boating, . . or the practices, techniques, knowledge and customs relating to boats, boat handing and boat operating on inland waterways ranging from tidal rivers and estuaries to the smallest and furthest inland of the man-made canals. Despite not being qualified in any way to do so, you simply can't resist the compulsion to wade into threads dealing with any sort of boat or boating related technical matter either to disrupt them with rubbish advice or worthless opinions, . . or to endorse and add to any mindless garbage that's already been posted by one of your equally poisonous thread wrecking cronies. Remember this thread - Barrowford Lock, a bit of an SOS ? Page 1, . . and your hero kris, with a 'like' from your other nominated hero, Shit-for-Brains, puts up what's probably, given the circumstances, one of the most crass posts ever to disgrace any internet forum. Then you dive in, with a remark calculated to create the false impression, using carefully chosen words, that kris's post was simply part of an inappropriate "tit for tat" exchange with me, . . implicating me as one of the originators of an unconnected and inappropriately timed spat, . . which I most certainly was NOT. A few more pages on, with the thread getting ever more hopelessly disrupted by and bogged down in unhelpful mindless claptrap, . . and you're back again with more of your characteristically sideways remarks calculated to drive things even further off course, . . something you persist with throughout the rest of the thread. At present, and for the last few days, TB has suffered from your unstinting efforts to close down any further discussion on yet another thread subject that you know sod all about, but on which you nevertheless feel qualified to shout your obstinately bigoted views. "Asking and answering technical questions on forums" isn't in the least "problematic", . . but people like you shoving your uninformed claptrap and worthless opinions down others throats most definitely are !

I wasn't on the forum yesterday so missed all this. There are a few points that people have made that would like to comment upon. One of the problems with asking a technical question anywhere on a group be it TB CWDF or FB is .... Unless the question is precise and limited, with all the relevant details supplied. The answer is difficult and what is more an open ended thing depending on those precise details. You usually have to prise those from the OP and in the meantime the huge rainbow range of possible answers are given. This is almost immediately followed by arguments among those whose pet theories are being dissed. this has on occasion been followed by name calling and once or twice blood curdling threats of the spilling of gore. There are people on here whose advice I always listen to. Telemachus is good with electronics with a higher degree of theoretical knowledge than I have. Technically his answers are nearly always sound. I have a wide range of training and experience in electrics with a solid (although now very dated) background in electronics but if the answers involve the theory of modern digital techniques I will let Nick answer (occasionally sticking my oar in when I think he strays too far from the KISS principle)
When it comes to solar and electric canal boats then I listen to peterboat
He has done it in practice and succesfully and now repeatedly keeping to the KISS principle (including LiFePO4 battery banks)
With small electric boats, pod drives etc @a is another.
Andrew has the Tee shirt and wears it well.
With general engineering and fabrication I always listen to @gazza
I read his threads with great interest and in awe of his skills.
Boat renovating and decorating then obviously Andyberg
and of course the unbelievable rebuilds of GRP craft of Captain Faffer
The majority of posters on here have a wide knowledge of the canal system and many have travelled virtually the whole system.
Some having spent many years living on board.
Some like me have a more varied and less specialised knowledge of boating.
I know he is marmite but Tony Dunkley has an unparalleled practical knowledge of the historic use of the waterways and
he knows the tidal waters and the vagaries of the Trent and Ouse extremely well.
If you venture onto those waters it is well worth listening to his advice.
With all these things there is one overiding principle you must have when getting advice on line.
Listen to it, evaluate it, then make up your own bloody mind.
Remember if you employ someone to give you advice and it proves to be wrong you have a come back
They carry efficacy insurance. (or should)

I have lived aboard my boat nine months a year, travelling the system for 17 years. Of course I'm not utterly incompetent technically or how the hell do you think I've survived ? I am aware that my DIY skills are unworthy of discussion in comparison to say @gazza faffer JohnV Telemachus ... I could go on. It's called self deprecation ... you REALLY should try it. As to your other nonsense ... am I to understand that your hate campaign against me is simply based on the fact I put a 'like' on somebodies post ? Is that the extent of my misbehaviour ? It makes sense because I know I have never posted untruths about TonyDunkley. Rog

What's the attraction for you of a forum with a nucleus of only a very few active members consisting mainly of prime specimens of the unjustifiably self-opinionated, the petty-minded, the mean spirited, the moronic, the ill-intentioned, and the congenitally dishonest -- to name but a few of their rather more endearing characteristics ?
