It's a bit of a strange business model really. The people who make the most use of the canal network are boaters, who only pay about one-seventh of the cost of operating that network. If it cost seven times as much to operate a ten-pin bowling alley as it took in receipts, it's hard to imagine the Government covering the shortfall in perpetuity. This is why CRT have to "big up" the recreational use by cyclists, walkers, anglers etc. I'm not sure what the answer is but I can only see Government funding continuing to dwindle. CRT do make a valid point in that the Government funding not being inflation-linked, the value of that grant falls by the rate of inflation- currently around 10%- every year. Would you apply that argument to the road network? In what way is the road network comparable? "HGVs alone pay enough tax to fund more than 90% of the current amount spent on road maintenance in the UK". vrioeurope.com/en/new-uk-road-network-investment-announced/

It could get interesting if a lot of people suddenly find they want to know more about the canals and use them. Possibility for major changes I feel.

Licence fees will no doubt continue to rise year on year.
Considering the whole range of government spending(of our money) truthfully how high a priority would any of us put on canal maintenance.
Having said that I'd like to see it higher than HS2 😁

Why not? This sort of thing is used by many organisations.

CRT desperately needs new directors, management and a ceo. The present lot don’t have a clue, but worse still, they don’t even have a way forward.

Maybe the CRT should set up gofundme and justgiving pages. They tried that when they had the breaches, didn’t work. Nobody gives a shit, mainly because CRT in its present form doesn’t give a shit. Sack Parry.

Parry needs to go. He is out of depth and attempting to punch way way above his paygrade. His constant consistency in making up stories is hilarious, but damaging for the canals. I’m not even sure if he himself believes the bullshit he pumps out. Pathetic man with little or no knowledge of his role.
