Were they around in 1880?
I thought they appeared when families started living in back Cabins and were traditional decoration until the end of narrow boat carrying m
Before that the day cabins had plain doors.
If I remember right !

The roses and castles will be a nod to the fact that canals were a capitalist enterprise and some people, albeit few, got very rich and had fabulous houses and rose gardens.
Meanwhile others toiled and raised families in terrible conditions the likes of which most people can't imagine.

I find the entire 'trad' aesthetic very appealing (apart from when folks go mad with lace), but it looks terrible when done badly. Since I have little artistic ability I'd have to pay for it though.
The examples in Andy's photos are fine in my estimation.

I don't think we'll be doing the roses and castles thing ... not my choice and we have the opportunity to add decor of an individual nature.
The rear doors are Ron Hough painted. I'm not a philistine so I'm not ripping them out, but it's a 1990s holiday boat so we can use our imagination with the side panel decor.
Could be tiles or lattice work ... who knows.
Which is why the plan is initially to simply line the steel ... art work on top once decided on.

Just checked a 2008 thread I started on canalworld about the door paintings and it seems they can be traced back to the middle of the 19th century.
Therefore my earlier remark is inaccurate.
How shocking !
I had a lovely pair of doors someone found in a bin when I had the lovely motorised horseboat.
Those were the days.
The old wreck was lovely and I did actually get it from Thames to Stafford once and back although why anyone would want to do that escapes me these days.
Narrow boats are funny things. I've had a few nice ones !

The old doors were the 'tray' type with a half inch lip around, and the timber work was scumbled with traditional artwork. After 30 years the bottom, particularly of the right one, was rotten, both timber and steel lip. I'm happy to get rid of the trad art and have something more personal. Rog

No roses and castles on our entirely authentic boat. Steve did BCN style deco for tug boats but we had it anyway even though we weren’t tug style. These are the back doors, obvs, but side doors are similar.

I quite like this tile design (as an example) but who knows what we'll end up with. Rog

I like the dollar signs on the Hudson boat.

I like the dollar signs on the Hudson boat. Hmm funny looking dollar signs. I’ve always thought they looked more like treble clefs. But ok a remote resemblance to that too. The amusing thing about our boat/Hudson boats is that they were not particularly expensive, well unless you wanted a lot of faff with vintage engines and back cabins. We had quite a lot of fancy extras, and structural changes to give 6’5” headroom inside, which pushed the price just over £100k but it could have come in quite a lot less for a basic fitted out boat. A lot of solidly built boat for the money.

I suppose there is a resemblance to the treble clef. I only achieved grade 6 on the flute at school mostly because I could not be bothered to do better. Yes it has been a constant theme.
Sometimes time dulls the pain and sometimes it doesn't.
Doors are alright just painted one colour.

Once saw a pic of a boat interior where every panel had been done as the sign-written portion of a trad cabin exterior, if you can imagine that. Every panel different. So GUCCC and FMC galore, etc. The execution was top line and it looked great. To me. Must have taken bleeding ages to do.

Side doors on ours are blackboards in a wooden frame. Useful for writing upon in chalk. We use them for lists, recipes, menu’s etc.
