Interesting but I think it needs work in the anti-battery theft department.
Remember that the best part about electric bikes as things stand at the moment is the lack of need for a licence or third party insurance.

Not legal on uk roads though. Motor rated too high. Unlikely to get that sort of range at full power either. Cheapest option for anyone with a decent bike they like is to fit a legal kit to it. Want more range, get another battery, like the fiido.

So it works out cheaper to buy a good quality second hand electric bike and you don’t get the hassle of doing the conversion. How’s your bafang doing?

A piece of cake actually. But you're right about the cost. Also plenty of second-hand electric bikes on marketplace. Some even come with a battery. One thing about most factory bikes is that they often use a battery specific to the model whereas a home build will be set up for something more generic.

Paying nearly a thousand pounds for a kit of parts, when £500-600 gets you a good quality second hand bike seems a bit mad.

I always think of electric bikes as being in the same category as elastic waist trousers and velcro fastening shoes ... a boon for you oldies 😁

The bafang is doing fine, kits plus a decent battery cost these days £699* but you are looking at a couple of £k or more for a mid drive bike, then if it's a Bosch, to be tied into their dealers and prices if owt goes wrong. Second hand? Motor may be ok but how about the battery? Decent batteries aren't cheap, cheap batteries can burn your house down. Now fitted a kit to the Brompton, that was way cheaper than a new e Brompton, I fitted a new chain, cogs and brake blocks at the same time, it's like new now. Also got the e-bent tandem working properly with a new controller and display and a battery cradle to take the 17ah batt off my hybrid. One of these days I might get a legal throttle on the hybrid, with single vehicle type approval, about £60 and a trip to a local DVLA centre. E- bent tandem has a legal throttle cos it was adapted before 2016. Brompton doesn't need one. * I'll bet a decent s/h ebike can't be had for much less. Just checked at Woosh Bikes, bafang 8fun bs01b, 20ah downtube bat, £699, cheaper and bigger battery than my kit, it was £799 IMMSMR.
