Not sure if this is sport or politics?
The FA's request to FIFA for their players to be allowed to wear poppies on their sleeves in a forthcoming match has been rejected. Apparently the FA say it's an individual thing, to show respect, nothing to do with politics or religion, slogans of which are banned by FIFA.
What I'm wondering is if FIFA bow to the pressure and allow them to be worn: would an individual, a player, who chose not to wear a poppy, for whatever reason, be vilified by all and sundry?
If it were me I wouldn't wear a poppy. I might have done 20 years ago but the vast majority of those who didn't die in the war are dead now anyway.
At some stage, we need to move on.

Wearing a poppy is a very personal thing, the choice is up to the individual. Me? yes I wear one, out of respect for those who have ever fallen not just for those in the two world wars, remember that many have given their lives in defence of our freedom in theatres other than WW1 and WW2. Phil

Phil Fair play. I just have this feeling though, that if the poppies are allowed, that any player will be denied the choice whether to wear one, or not.

I chose to wear one and I'm mighty p+ssed off that FIFA perhaps one of the most corrupt quangos in sport can tell the FA what our players can wear on armbands during a match played on 11:11 in the UK...Flamin cheek imho

Good on ya. I choose not to. If I were an international footballer (big if!) being forced to wear one would be just as bad as being denied the opportunity to do so.

No one should be made to wear one in my opinion.
The support of the cause, and wearing a poppy must be an individuals choice.

There have been other wars and the Legion continues its work with the more recently wounded. I take your point about moving on, but the poppy is so well established I think it's maybe got a less WW1/WW2-specific meaning for younger generations. I believe it should be personal choice.

Perhaps I've become cynical. If poppies are allowed, I very much doubt if there will be a choice. There will be a lot of pressure to comply.

Don't you think it's kind of stupid to consider wearing poppies whilst playing sport.
Surely the sensible choice would be for the FA and Premier League to make donations (or not as they choose) observe the silence, and get on with it.
The individuals, players and officials, can make their own choices away from the game.

Wearing of poppies should be individual choice and I do not think FIFA should get involved..If they hadn't then it would not have been debated on public forum. For me I think they are poignant reminders not just of lives lost in the past wars but continuing conflicts. The previous beautiful displays. ..Tower and soldier at Hilmorton make me feel quite emotional. I love to see fields of poppies.. The poppy will always be associated with loss at war.

The ban does not only affect the FA as England are playing Scotland on the 11th and the SFA has also been told "no poppies". I am glad that the FA and SFA are appealing to FIFA and I hope they are successful. Whether individual players choose to wear a poppy or not is immaterial. The choice should be theirs and not FIFAs.
