Well, if I have to go to the Nationwide to get the form, then I may as well just pay in the cheque while I'm there instead.

It can be downloaded. It's just an option available.

It can be downloaded. It's just an option available. Ok ta. I very rarely get cheques (this was a refund of road tax after I put the Vespa on SORN) but I'll bear it in mind for the future. Funny things, cheques. Back in the day I used to get through three or four cheque books a year, with my current one, the first cheque I wrote was in 2007 and I'm still only on number 12. For about five years the only cheques I wrote was to the farmer for my mooring, once a year. Apart from that and the occasional one to DVLA I never use them nowadays.

I have always wondered why they are cheques rather than checks.

Personal cheques are very few and far between. However I write loads in work, it’s one of the few ways I have of knowing if my documents are in the Probate Registry, HMLR OR OPG such is their incompetence.

Government departments just refuse to embrace any type of technology. It's like when you buy a house and the searches take six weeks and cost £500. If the information was computerised and held on a database, then it would take two minutes and cost £15. it's like DVLA send me a cheque, knowing I am going to have to spend time and money redeeming it when they could just instantly transfer the money into my bank account. It's just their way of letting us plebs know that they don't give a shit about us.

On line banking is quite amazing.
My nephew's wedding is in the next week or so , and as the happy couple already live together and have their own home, rather than a wedding present I transferred some cash to their account.
It immediately showed in their account and mine ... what's with all the 'five working days to clear' bull shit we used to have with cheques ?

Just be aware that the seemingly instant process doesn't work outside banking hours with some banks. i.e. transfer 20k on a Friday evening it won't arrive until Monday morning.

I'm still a great fan of cash and use notes and coins for most everyday transactions but it's great to be able to sit at home and call up a bank statement at any time rather than waiting for one to arrive in the post.

Rog It was in a past life. A whole weekend of fretting about where me money had gone, only to finally work out that I had missed the deadline by 5 mins...
