With a calorifier, you do not have to heat up all the water before you have hot water you can use. The hot water builds up at the top quite quickly.

Boat water pumps run up to about 12 litres a min, so a 90L tank at an average of 80c or so should give say up to 25 mins of showering at 40c in summer and worst case 15 mins in winter. So in the latter case that's about 12 mins for the missus and three mins left for you of course!
90L is the max size Surecal do in vertical, I'd reckon 50-60L is the absolute minimum for most couples, could always boost a bit in between showers if there's a diesel heater.

There is a lot to be said for a vertical calorifier mainly they stay hot longer because they are taller than they are wide. Another factor is that usually the top is higher than the engine which prevents back syphoning. This is where a thermosyphon sets itself up and overnight your calorifier goes cold but your engine has been kept warm by water flowing from the calorifier. We had that issue and it took quite a bit of sorting out, now our 55ltr horizontal calorifier will keep hot enough for two days with two of us.

Having viewed a couple of the other boats that have been built and fitted out, the calorifier was sat higher than the engine but I will double check with the builder. Schooner
