"Is that the one in Norway ?" - are there any others? I guess so, not my picture. I have been through Hell twice - 1981 by train from Trondheim to Fauske, and five years ago driving from Sunndalsora to Mo i Rana. Five years ago I'd just come back to Helsinki from England by plane, and my car was in Helsinki. I decided to come home to Himanka, an 8 hour journey, by way of... err.... Ålesund! I hadn't been there and was curious, and also down the Trollstigen. There was a snowstorm that day and I passed one Norwegian car that had slid off the road before Mosjoen (ambulance already there) and I was concerned as to how I could cross the mountains; it was 100 kilometres from Mo i Rana to the next big road over the Caledonian backbone into Sweden, so I had to drive that first in the wilderness before climbing. Luckily the snow wasn't so deep on that road, and I began the 400km descent across Swedish Lapland. It's quite scary to be on your own out there, a whole load of nothing, very few cars. That day all the way to Himanka - 13 hours with just the one stop in the Swedish alcohol shop in Kalix. I thought I was mental then, but then we got a narrowboat...! Here's Ålesund:

Dont forget, the nasty vindictive way CWDF was managed meant the threat of 'sanctions' for posting on or mentioning Thunderboat on CWDF. And nothing of the sort the other way around. Exactly, even CDS took himself off onto the stool

When I was at Sea on the Iron Ore trade we sometimes went round North Cape to either Kirkenes or Murmansk. If the weather was particularly bad, we sometimes used to go the inshore route along the Norwegian coast inside the Lofotens and past Tromso. Used to look forward to those trips ... beautiful scenery

About 8 years ago me & Witchy cycled from Stamsund to Å and back, 80km each way. I should certainly like to go back. Some people just don't know what they are missing! Witchy had whale steak in this restaurant: www.marenanna.no/ and we discovered 'bacalau' in Svolvaer. Norway is the most amazing country. And it's our next door neighbour Here's the Lofotens:

The surest way to increase membership would be to add "canal forum" to the site's name, as others have pointed out. Howzabout sticking an advert in the Towpath Talk paper?!! Or in any of the canal magazines. How about having an article about 'this new site called Thunderboat' in a canal magazine? Who's going to write to them? "YOU"

Seriously, a year in Norway on holiday is not enough. We can be there, to the end of the Lofotens, in 24 hours just by driving our car. But now we have a narrowboat all our holidays have to be directed towards England (and, OK, Chirk and Llangollen are in Wales). People don't realise, generally, how empty Scandinavia is. Only last night we were driving from Kälviä to Ullava and I said I can't believe how f***ing (Sir Nibble copyright) long this road is - nothing but 'firewood' for ever and ever! At home we always forget, of course, how far WE are from 'the civilised world'. It's a heck of a trek from here right across Sweden and Norway and across the sea to northern Denmark. Just mooses and the occasional wolf.
