We've been doing some boating over the last week, except when frozen in! Anyway we came up the Rushall flight which was closed over the autumn for extensive maintenance. So here is the verdict: Several new gates fitted but they've transferred the anti-vandal locks to the wrong side of the bottom mitre locks ie you have to stand one side of the beam to operate the anti-vandal locks, then go around the other side to wind the paddle (or reach over awkwardly) 3 of the shiny new gates with overhauled paddle gear have anti-vandal locks that are unopenable. We have thus renamed them anti-boater locks. Finally CRT's mindset is clear from their new logo that adorns some of the structures:

Its very unimaginative use of language.

Just a thought, but have you reported the mis placing of the locks to C&RT?
If fitted by contractors they may not be aware.
Additionally, it may improve the placing in the future.
Of course it's entirely possible it'll make no difference whatsoever.
And, by the way, I'm very envious of your recent boating, being stuck at home until new year.

Rog I did think about it but then I noticed that most of them on the Perry Barr flight are similar so clearly it's a widespread "problem" (not a serious problem). Yes it's nice to get out, although I wasn't expecting to get iced in for 2 days! I need to bear in mind not just what the expected temperatures are, but also what the temperatures have recently been. Of course it was quite warm when we flew down on Thursday but I think it had been pretty cold up to that point and so as soon as the temperature hit zero, ice was forming due to the water already being well chilled. i was a bit worried about our new 2-pac blacking since although we did it nearly a month ago, it has been very cold so I don't think it's fully cured. However the ice breaking we did do yesterday morning doesn't seem to have left any mark. Anyway I can recommend the moorings at Longwood junction, very peaceful, friendly natives, right next to the services, with frequent busses into Walsall and on to Birmingham for £4 day return. CRT people were out at Perry Barr filling a low pound so by the time we arrived it was all fine. They said they had filled a low pound on Rushall earlier. I wonder if they patrol regularly to check levels or just reacted to a call, but we didn't see any other boats moving.

We'll hopefully be back onboard new years eve.
The canals in winter can be magical, although the mud can, at times be a tester.
Not long now.

It is not unusual for the anti vandal locks on the flight to be jammed by the local vandals. Sometimes just bits of wood hammered into the gaps, sometimes superglue. At least if you email WM office you'll get a reply, unlike many other regions.
