I like wood, I have varnished t&g up the sides and most of the roof, but in the bedroom I have rather dark varnished ply panels that I want to lighten up. The ceiling is pine t&g, that's staying as it is. What a potential mess sanding and prepping the varnish. I came across this www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/esp-easy-surface-prep/Tempting! Has anyone used it?

sanding it shouldn't be a potential mess. you only need to thoroughly scratch the surface of the varnish to provide a key, then use a water-based paint.

In my saloon the deckhead is mostly varnished ply. Although broken by sections of pine and by mouldings I have always felt that it was too much samey. In addition under the side decks it makes it a little on the dark side. I have been playing with the idea of painting it white but I was concerned that if I disliked it, it would be a hell of a job cleaning it up to go back to varnish. I have bought some vinyl wallpaper (not white but a parchment shade) which I intend to put up with thin battens in a pale wood covering the seams. I am working on the principle that if I don't like it I should find it comparatively easy to remove and return to the original (I hope). I have had all the material for a couple of months now ....... but it is fairly long way down my priority list
