I'm gradually imposing the British sense of humour on the other staff of Pohjolan Matka. They seem to be a good crowd. It's a job I've been lucky enough to drop into, but it is hard work too. We even have saunas in our buses

Hey! Foxy,I dont know any thing about finland but i like the look of it, so if you dont mind answering a few questions........... Is it expensive? whats the weather like in summer? where is good to go to?[not a city] Whats the story on boat rental? I remember you posted pics [not sure if it was here or cwdf but you showed these little cabins in the wild that you could go to by boat and stay for free with a stove, tell us a bit about that. What are the people/culture like? What is the winter like? And anything else that might encourage a person to get the hell out of where they are at.
Sorry if this derails the thread folks.

Try in Google 'Suomen maisemaa' (Finland's landscape) 'Suomen ladot' (Finland's barns' 'Suomi ilmasta' (Finland from the air) Finnish State Railways = www.vr.fi (vr = valtion rautatiet) I've driven over this bridge a few thousand times during 21 years!:

I used to regularly get this ferry from Harwich to Turku, many happy memories... The last time I went on it the crew were very sad, they said they missed the days when the passengers were predominantly British, they had had to close the bar because the honesty box never had a penny put onto it, and several of the crew had had their cabins broken into and personal possessions stolen.

Turku to Harwich must have been about a 3 day journey, right round the southern end of Sweden and over the top of Denmark (or Kiel Canal?). There is a road sign in Turku which says Harwich, I always thought it looked a bit odd! No passenger ships to Scandinavia any more from the UK, I think Hamburg is the nearest you can get, or is it just Amsterdam these days? Used to be Bergen/Kristiansand - Newcastle. The Bergen - Shetland - Iceland ferry is still running but astronomically expensive.

Yes, the MV Garden used to leave on a Friday night- the port staff would come into the Angel pub when they were ready for us to drive aboard to drag us out- and used to get into Turku early Tuesday morning, she went via the Kiel canal with a stop at Cuxhaven.
