One of the strong things about Thunderboat in my opinion, is the fact that there are all kinds of boaters involved, from rowers to sea going vessels, GRP's, to ditch draggers, to trail boats.
I love the photos, even if I don't always understand.
We don't need league tables or rules do we?

I spent 5 years living on a sea yacht, but sTILL wasn't considered a proper boater by the yachting community because I had a plastic one! You just can't win. I'm now considered a 'Shiney Boater' because we have a Hudson narrowboat!
Today I heard a rumour that older Hudson boats are becoming sought-after, since the demise of Steve Hudson a couple of years ago. Suck it up, you Hudson-bashers!!

Rog This is only my third year of owning my boat, but what I like about canal boating is that you can have a £100,000 boat or a £500 boat but nobody ever seems to behave in a snooty or superior way to somebody whose boat is worth less than theirs.

First, we would need to establish what a proper boat is? Rog Pretty well anything that isn't a narrowboat or a floating pontoon (similar) I'd say. For the avoidance of doubt I am a narrow"boat" owner, but really - boat is stretching it!

Not the canal i have used over the years. I have always had GRP boats and not gin palaces, far from. I witnessed so much snobbery and ignorance is one reason i am straying away from the canal. Not all but a good few about up here. The shiner the boat the worst thye are. I can name a few boats aswell as i remember the names. I've never fallen in, never polished the outside, never had a burgee flying or a flag stuck to the tiller, never dressed up as a 19th century boatman, never shouted at anyone going past, never refused to share a lock with anyone, never masterbated over the thought of a replica back cabin, never painted a rose or a castle or had decorative water cans and mops on the roof, never moaned at someones engine running after 8pm, never stopped anyone breasting up if mooring is scarce, never bothered if someone has a pram hood or not. I'm not a proper boater

I'm not a proper boater All of those, except I do polish and wax the boat once a year before I go cruising because it makes it look much better and possibly keeps the rust at bay. Oh, and I do sometimes dress up as my avatar.

I have experienced some snobbery when cruising my little Ormelite. I have never understood this kind of thing myself. You seem to get it with all types of boating. Me ? well I just like boats of all sorts ....... the only ones I sneer at are conversions that look like a chicken shed on a raft.

As we have now covered a fair few miles in our boat with no big cock-ups, I had little labels made to be sewn on to our shirt pockets: COMMANDER TURNER and COMMANDER STENBERG. As we are the commanders of our vessel. You may salute. Cactus, Badger?
