I'm now in my third boat, renovated myself, boating on the cut in my own boat since 2001. Many a canoe journey prior to that, built my own at 17. I love travelling on t'cut, the history etc. I noticed on another thread that someone set themselves up as arbiter of proper boaters, branding another poster as "just passing through", though they have been boating for many years.
So who is a proper boater then. Historic boat? Liveaboard? Shipman beard? CWDF / IWA membership? Where is the line drawn, and why draw it there?

A proper boater is anyone who follows similar usage patterns, styles of operation and has similar general attitudes to oneself. Anyone who doesn't meet these criteria is an idiot who thinks he knows it all but doesn't.

I think it highly amusing that anyone pootling about in narrowboat thinks they're a boater no matter how long they've been doing it. Ha, ha, ha. I think it says more about their ego than boating and advise them to try a sailing boat on the sea.

Some prospective politicians I see! I didn't ask who isn't, I asked who is and why. What are the rules?

Love boats, no longer own one..sigh..but have been on lots of different sorts..in fact actively look at ways to get on board.. so if that fits criteria i'll wear the cap..if not I'm a wannabe boater.....
