I took the oil filter housing off my perkins P4 engine and it looks to be a washable element. I did not go further as I haven't got a waste oil container for all the oil in the sump. Will find one. The filter housing has 'Vokes' cast into it. Anyway whats the best way to clean the element if it is indeed a washable one ? Bucket of petrol?? And what is the right oil for the engine. C1960s Perkins P4 slow running version. Attachments:

Diesel or paraffin if its a felt element. It appears to be a metal gauze element in there. I didn't take it out I just dropped the housing and had a quick look in with the oil still in there. The fixing bolt is at the top so when it is removed all the oil stays in the bowl unless tipped out. I managed to get it off without spilling any oil. Like picking up a pint. I've not come across this sort of filter before. I've handled element types with a bolt right through which get very messy when you pull the bolt out and also the more modern spin on type but this is a new one to me.

Its felt inside a metal gauze, you have to dismantle it, download a free manual if I were you.

Plenty of info on that original Perkins manual.
Straight 30 oil will suffice.

Good to see you're getting on with the oil change. Perhaps Gazza can get down to Franklins Gardens and dish out a rocket there Rog
