Thats the problem with our language to many meanings of the same word..I guess when writing in a forum its easy to misinterpret words and thus inadvertently cause offence.
I'm not a whisky drinker but dad was and his fav was Auchintochan...not the cheapest one but I think it was one of the several years old sort. I used to buy him it every Christmas until he quit drinking whisky following an episode when one of his grandsons(my sisters boy) gave him large glass neat at a family wedding and my son had to carry him home.I then had a very 'ill' dad to care for..he never again touched whisky.

The Fox has graciously apologised, and I accept.
But I fear he lives inside his head which is very crowded, and rarely lives by one of my old Mum's favourite sayings "Think before you speak".
I never gain the impression with Foxy, that he speaks maliciously, just on occasion thoughtlessly.

How is describing someone's post as bollox "inadvertantly" offensive? I would have thought that is quite obvious, some people may not be offended by some body using the term bollox to describe their post, foxy has just called one of my posts 'bollox' and I certainly wasn't 'offenfded'. If you mis judge who would be offended by the use of the term then you have done it inadvertently. HTH.

How is describing someone's post as bollox "inadvertantly" offensive? Im just trying to explain that sometimes people do not mean to give offence but that their words are taken as such the word 'bollox' to me has become a throw away phrase that has lost offensive impact..my rather strait laced teacher daughter even uses it..not at school I would suspect but certainly it does make an appearance when she's with the family. Perhaps it all depends on what you are used to... I think Foxy just writes whats in his head and sometimes it is OTT. I try to read and re read my posts and quite often delete/edit/amend..I would rather never cause offence because I do not like unpleasantness.

I think you are right and I also think that the deliberate misspelling by using an "x" at the end instead of the "cks"degrades the rudeness quite a lot as well. It does to me at least but everyone experiences offence differently.

At the risk of 'flogging a dead horse' I was not offended by Foxy's remark, I considered it rude and entirely unnecessary. If he wished to query my assertion that the whisky named was 'unusual' he could have done so without telling me what I posted was 'bollox'. In actual fact I'd said it was an ' unusual Islay' which it is (tastes unlike any other Islay), but Foxy misunderstood and thought I meant it was rare. I have just outlined both our positions, without reference to any part of the anatomy. Just to add for what it's worth.....I hate deliberate misspellings. Rog

There are some terrific blends too. Black Bottle and Monkey Shoulder are good blends in my view. Rog Santa brought me a bottle of Monkey Shoulder today. Very nice.

There's a real proper whisky shop in Highworth near Swindon. Perhaps it's just me but Swindon has never struck me as the natural epicentre for connoisseurs of Scotch whisky.
