I'd like to get a canopy made with a single hoop so it can be folded down like a convertible car hood. Its for my little 14ft double ended day boat.
How does it work with canopies do they come and measure then send you a price? Do they charge for that bit?
and does anyone have any recommendations - boat is in east London.

Have a word with Faffer. Once he's done his boat canopy, I bet he'd turn his hand to it Rog

He's got a machine you are right.
I can tackle the metal hoop myself I think that shouldn't be too complex but I definitely hate sewing machines and trying to do it by hand is going to be a ball ache.

When i was looking into get one made for the cruiser ( around £1300 - £2000 all in ) they come out min 3 times to first to measure up, go away to make it, come back to fit and then maybe again to after if need be.
Cheaper if you take the boat to them So if you need them to come to you get a company close as possible to the boat.
The single hoop for mine would of been around £330, I get the 19mm OD 316 SS for £35 a length. $m long a i think, i forgot now.
The companies i spoke to gave a quote there and then as they do so many i guess they have a good idea on what it will cost, even on a one of canopy.
If mine turns out ok i would be happy to help out making it for you....but lets see if i can sew one first, not holding my breath on getting it done good enough...for my likes.

I made hoops for my last boat out of electrical conduit. A sparks kindly left a wrench and die where I worked. A couple of screw fit 90deg bends and home made hinge fixings, a splash of hammerite and Roberts your mother's brother.

I was considering using 22mm copper tube filled with sand then bent to shape by hand. I have end fittings for this size tube. Its a bit thick for a small boat but 15mm copper is going to be too flimsy.

SS tube is not that dear from a stockholders. 1.5mm wall is enough;) I have a 19mm pipe bender that i have borrowed that you could borrow but then thats getting it down to you ( bloody heavy ) and needing new fittings init.

I have not tried this so thanks for the advice. As I only need the cover to be a "tent" not something used when driving the boat it might not be necessary to have bent poles anyway. I spotted a hoop of aluminium or stainless in the canal recently when the water was clear. If its still there when I pass again I'll see if I can spot it and get it out. I pulled out a nice clean "maxi micro" scooter for my older daughter in the same place. Thanks for the offer of the pipe bender
