I have 3 strangely heavy bricks (ballast). They are 10" x 5" x 2.5" and weigh 15kg each. A bit like engineering bricks but heavier still.
Two have a large V cut out at one end.
I meant to take a photo. I was wondering what they could be.

I calculate the density to be 7323kg/cu m which is approximately 3x the density of blue engineering bricks (2405kg/cu m), but bricks they are.

Storage heater bricks?
Bonded magnetite bricks apparently.

Storage heater bricks? Bonded magnetite bricks apparently. I think you are correct, 5500kg per cu m. My bathroom scales could account for that. I'm looking forward to testing with a magnet tomorrow. 👍

Its something I have heard suggested before for ballasting as you get high density in a small convenient package. I don't know if they are magnetic but I expect so !

I think they are filled with gold. It would be a really good way to hide your wealth - building your house of bricks which just look like bricks. Get a hammer and chisel and break them open to find out. Or lead stolen from roofs.

Just posting to confirm that they are indeed magnetic, so that's that sorted. I'll be keeping an eye out for more of these.
