Hi, I need to add a breather outlet to my water tank. It's a sealed stainless steel tank with no access hatch. I've found this kind of fitting - but not sure if they're shipping to UK and it's quite pricey. Would someone have a better suggestion on what to use?

As it's a breather I would think something like a 15mm essex flange would be worth a look, though I am a little concerned about using a brass fitting on a stainless tank, though as it's fresh water it's probably ok www.toolstation.com/shop/p41238Added - and please no essex flange jokes

Our old stainless diesel tank had a brass 15mm tank compression fitting for the breather for donkeys years with no ill effects.

Is the vent required for when filling or for when emptying the tank ?

A half inch garden hose should have plenty of room to let it breath while filling. Our water tank breather was blocked and the tank made the most god awful racket until I sorted it. depending on the position of the filler A hole in the cap may well let rain water and shite in, depends how fussy you are I guess!

True. Seems to be quite awkward to retrofit a vent to a stainless steel tank. I've never done it so I don't really know what the best option is It did occur to me that the system may be designed with a hoselock type connector to fill the tank. I have seen this on a narrow boat and it appears to be a pretty nice option but would definitely need a well made vent line. I split a polypropylene tank on one of my narrow boats in the 90s when using one of the EA Thames Chubb fire hose reels. It had a vent but the pressure from the hose was too great and the pull of the lock keeper's cup of tea offer was too much for me, causing me to take my attention away from my boat (cardinal sin) Result = 6 inches of water in bottom of 55ft narrow boat ! Oh dear They fitted restrictors after that as I wasn't the only one to have a problem. A fire hose is for putting fires out (obviously),

That's what I have now, a hole in the filler cap, and just like gazza said, it's letting too much crap in Thanks for the Essex flange, that's exactly what I'm looking for! Also what's wrong with stainless steel/brass combination? Does it cause galvanic corrosion or something?

Tee the breather into the filler pipe near the top?
Just want to then take the breather to a higher point if poss.
