I'd be interested to hear about the 'thugish' behavior if you'd care to relate the story, Nick. Can't picture Rick on Auriga being 'thugish'. Wouldn't have thought he had it in him TellyMackus was referring to the other fuel boater as the one who was thuggish.

Wouldn't have thought he had it in him I've always found the coal boats (if you're within their bailiwick) are very amenable to texts and phone calls to arrange meetings. But of course if you're an eight or more hours a day type cruiser, it will be more difficult to rendezvous. Rog I said the former, not the latter! Rick is a gentleman.

Rick/Auriga absolute gentleman and can't wait to see him again. halsall just ran the ice, JJ on roach again a gent and running fine and grabbed what we wanted/needed off him. You know what, everybody else can go fill up elsewhere and run out when it gets chilly, those guys are gold
Ps turners are sweet too!

Jane was showing me videos on her FB site, of Dusty breaking thick ice on the Oxford to make deliveries.
There are black spots where coal boats don't trade, but I'm a fan and seek them out where I can.

I do try to support coal boats when possible, but I think in the 7 years we’ve had Telemachus I’ve only bought fuel from coal boats twice, one from Bletchley on the nene and once from Auriga when I passed him tied up at Rugby. I wouldn’t use the former again as a result of the proprietor’s thuggish behaviour towards someone I know. But generally I find that when we need diesel, a coal boat is not around. I have passed Halsall on a couple of occasions, tied up with no-one home. Bought coal from Ozzie fuel boat having come across him just after buying some rather expensive Thames fuel, and failed to get fuel from Dusty once due to their running low on stocks and keeping it for their regular customers, and once because the boat was tied up and they were on holiday. So overall it’s a bit like the old corner shop - people want to give them trade to keep them open but they don’t actually sell what you want and are closed when you want to shop there (this being before many such shops were run by our Asian friends!) I'm sorry Nick, but I have to disagree. I met you in the summer and it's a different run then as I am sure you will agree. They run a pretty sound business and Are always 'open when you want to shop' I look forward to meeting again next February so we can debate this or are you elsewhere in the winter months? Xxxxxxx

I don't use coal boats any more for two reasons.
1. I really have problems lifting 25kg bags around even if it is only from roof of boat. I do hate them.
2. As the boat I live on is stuck on a residential mooring I arrange delivery of bulk quantities of 10kg bags of Brazier from Logs2U or sometimes I collect them in my car from Wickes.
40p a kilo=£10 for 25kg.
I hate excel it really stinks like burning plastic. Horrible stuff. My neighbours burn it and when wind is in wrong direction it sometimes gets in my vents. I'd hate to put that in my own fire.

Oxbow Excel is the best smokeless on our stove.
Little ash (only need to empty the ash pan once in 24 hours) good heat, and stays in very well.
We've tried all the smokeless fuels readily available, and this is the best for us (although not the cheapest).

I don't know if there is more than one fuel called Excel (i think there might be) but the one I usually encounter is a petcoke (oil based) product and stinks to high heaven. I'm not religious. Eta just checked and there is only one formula 65-70% petcoke. That's why it stinks. It also burns too hot and destroys grates I believe. smokecontrol.defra.gov.uk/fuel-details.php?id=30

I was using Wildfire which was good but they seem to have changed the composition because it produces far more ash than it used to. Other than that is ok and has no trouble staying in for 12-14 hours even in my small Puffin. I bought a couple of bags of Excel today and also something called Newburn so I'll experiment with that this trip. I burn a lot of wood on the mooring, which is free, although I have a very unsightly tar stain running down the side of the boat from the roof drain apertures now, so I'm going to have to work out how to get rid of that. I'm thinking petrol or WD40?

Not sure how to get rid of that but its worth fitting a cone shaped liner to the flue to prevent it.
Another approach is to sand off the paint in the area affected and repaint it with a vertical black bar so it doesn't look so rough.

A bit of brasso works, mixed with elbow grease, but it takes the top of the paint off.
I understand Squirrels are prone to grates burning through.
Our stove is a Valor Arden which we had fitted about 12 years ago. Original grate and no problems.
As I say, Excel is great on our stove having tried loads of fuels.

Cripes, I only pay £6/20kg. 20kg keeps me toasty for 2 1/2 days or 2 days if I go a bit mad. Oxbow Red, not technically smokeless, but in reality it's as smokeless as any other.
Ash pan every day Rog? !!! Once a bag with this stuff. My stove never goes out, last lit at Christmas.
