They would get moved on pronto, or maybe they see authorities as part of why they are homeless and don't want to get into any further trouble. Well, this is the thing - ........ It's more complex than that. Councils budgets are being cut, primarily by Central Gov, benefit rules are being interpreted with what some might say is a religious fervor, there is no money to spend by the Gov or Councils without borrowing more, rich get richer, poor get poorer. Any solution has to address the last two points and indeed (in my opinion) the middling rich will also need to take a financial hit. Doubt it will happen though.

Don't you live in Finland? Perhaps pretending they're all scroungers who actually live in superb homes makes one sleep better. I'm sure that's the answer I'd get on CWDF, but I expected better from here. There will always be those that seek to 'work the system'. People will always find a way to let you down. But some of the poor scruffy sods are pitiful. There's got to be a better way hasn't there? Rog Yes, stop allowing our taxes to prop up low wages at profitable businesses and spend it helping people. What a con on all of us this situation is. Taxes going straight to dividend payments of those who already have enough money to live and spare money to own shares. If the profits of these companies was fairly earned that would be one thing, but it's not, it's coming from taxes. Exactly. And stop taxes propping up slum "landlords" by paying housing benefit to parasite profiteers. The whole system is fucked. Its a phase of capitalism. Business consolidation, privatisation and general asset stripping has already been done. This will lead to bad things happening.

But... Things were even worse 100-150 years ago. 15 million were starving, more slums, more deprivation. It's the same old shit but we've become more sensitive to the wrongness of it. But still poor people vote for the parties aligned with the robber baron bandits because "they're better at running the economy". Sure they are, but they're not running it for the benifit of all, or society in general or even a majority of people. There is no shortage of money, being made, it's just barrowed out of the uk at a sprint or hoarded for the benefits of comparatively few people. Same old same old with ever changing disguises.

If you've never read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, The road to Wigan Pier and/or Down and out in Paris and London, I recommend them for documenting just how annoyingly accepting and/or disinterested people are and have always been of economic imbalance. We even fight for it, maybe we love it!

That's true but massive changes have occurred in the last 100 years to enslave people even more to the capitalist model of living.
Cars. The ultimate freedom ? So that's the ultimate freedom to pay money for something you really should not need. Handy tool to work on peoples status anxiety "oh dear the neighbour has a better car than me I feel so inferior". Nobody needs a flash car. Totally unnecessary product.
Electricity, gas etc. Impoves comfort level and allows you to pay for something you do not need.
Telecommunications. Encourages people to move away from each other and still be able to talk. Totally unnecessary but very useful for controlling peoples behaviour.
Internet. Another tool to enslave the masses. That's capitalism gone mad. Deliberately damage the population just for money.
Eco worrying. Encourage people to worry about the planet so they pay money for things they don't need. The planet can look after itself ffs !
Same old shit yes but much more devious and modernised.
Less people in "poverty" but that's in large part due to the welfare state which is a crowdfunded security service where wealthy people take money from the pockets of the average working man (or woman) to give to the "poor" to keep them in their place and reduce the motivation to go and break down the doors of the wealthy. All dressed up as a nice caring society looking after vulnerable people.
Bollocks !

It appears clear to me, that many of these homeless are genuine.
There are some around the busy shopping areas who are begging, with lengthy hand written boards, interacting with those who pass by, clean and well dressed. They appear to be begging 'as an option'. I have no evidence other than my own observations.
Then there are those, usually young men and women, who are filthy (and smell it) with a tent (if fortunate) sleeping bag, and bags of possessions.
They tend to look disconnected with the world, and are not actively begging (no signs or interaction). Many appear understandably, to be in the depths of depression.
I truly cannot see anyone 'acting' the part of the latter group.
I cannot begin to think how we can possibly help them. The couple of quid I can afford to give them will go nowhere.

Bath has many. There are tents along the towpath, floating rafts with shacks on.
Just went to do some exploring abd rhe first three places i tried were full with squatters/homeless.
There are plenty of big issue sellers. And there us some land by the canal that appears to of been taken over and they are growing vegtables which they sell.
Unfortunately at home the local big issue seller has been in and out of prison for stabbing someone with a used needle and stealing a charity pot.
There are three or four that beg quite aggressively, they are homeless but most people give rhem a drink or a sarnie as they are seen everday begging amd then goimf to the local crack den.
I dont have the answers. I got by but had freinds to help me back on my feet.

Simple answer
Never give anything to someone begging. If everyone followed this advice there would be no beggars.
It seems simplistic but the fact is that humans have survival instinct like all animals. They won't just die.

It seems simplistic but the fact is that humans have survival instinct like all animals. They won't just die. Just maybe become criminals instead. Seems the obvious alternative. Bit of a no win situation really. I agree with your earlier comment about "middling rich" taking a hit but turkeys don't vote for christmas. Simple fact is humans are animals therefore subject to natural greed instinct. They pretend to have "intelligence" but at the end of the day if you wave money in someone's face they will take it - regardless of what effect it may have on anyone else. Money is all people want. Its a bit ridiculous but never mind.
