Rog I've been taking a bit of a slow run back and I'm at Rugeley now, I'm heading for Shardlow at the moment (which is of course Desiree's spiritual home) and thence south on the GU, probably to London.

You're getting bored with this aren't you? Rog No, I just haven't done a great deal over the last few days. I'm still at Fradley Junction and I tend to get hay fever this time of year which makes me even more lethargic and sleepy than usual. I'm hoping it will rain tonight as that always improves things a bit as I have to move soon, the toilet is nearly full and TellyMackus has gone so I haven't even got a chimney to empty the cassette down.

Rog Very windy here now, wouldn't be surprised if a tree or two come down today across the cut. I'm hoping it blows over by this afternoon, I want to do a short move and I could do without being blown all over the place.

We are heading up the Caldon in a couple weeks, our first venture north of Great Heywood. where do the Stoke "badlands" begin and end, and where are the best overnight moorings on either side?

Some people say not to stop between Etruria Junction and Engine Lock (lock 4) but I stopped both ways on the VM at Milton and didn't have any problems. There were other boats there too. However, the Caldon doesn't really get going until after Engine Lock so it's probably as well to head for there on the first day, about three hours from Etruria.

The Caldon is a very rural (and underused) canal, there are plenty of places to moor in the middle of nowhere, if you want a pub with food then the Boat Inn at Cheddleton and the Black Lion at Consall Forge both have VMs nearby.
There aren't that many shops near the canal so try to stock up on provisions beforehand. Unless you can get through the tunnel at Froghall, there's only one sanitary station, at Park Lane, Endon.
It's worth timing a trip so you can be on the Cheddleton-Froghall section when the railway is operating (Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday) as it runs alongside the canal for most of its length and adds a lot of visual interest for those who are chuffed to bits by such things.

Yes, if I had to be at a certain place by a certain time then I would move, but I'm not on any kind of schedule so I'd sooner just wait for more benign conditions before proceeding. I probably will do a short move later if the wind drops but for now moving would be more of a chore than a pleasure.

What pussies. We've done 3 electric locks, 5 normal (wide) locks, one 2-rise staircase, and two 3-rises - and all before lunch. Blowing a gale, but the spiders like that, it turns their webs into bouncy castles. After lunch we're off again - perhaps we'll get to Bingley. Yay! You should get to bingley if your at dobsons lock already
