It's a towpath user counter. There's a few around the network.

Well, I've finished with the Leek Branch, which was pleasant enough but lacked the visual interest of the Caldon main line I thought.
I've been to Park Lane services and emptied the bog etc but I like the Caldon so much that I've decided to stay a bit longer so I've winded and I'm going to head back to Consall in the morning. There's a gala event on at the railway with all of their locos running, not just the aesthetically displeasing and rather incongruous Tomasz the Tank Engine, and also a cider festival so that's me sorted for the weekend.
Still don't know what to do afterwards.

Still don't know what to do afterwards. How about walking past that towpath counter 500 times? Next time I go back to Thanet I'll buy one of those beach windmills and gaffer tape it in front of the sensor.

I thought you'd booked in for the tidal Thames ? Rog Haven't booked anything (you do need to book the Limehouse lock but only the day before) but I am leaning towards a trip down to London after this. I do want to do the Thames again and I want to do it while I still have comprehensive insurance, I may have to switch to third party insurance next year unless I get a hull survey. For the time being all I have decided for sure is that I will be heading south from here as my last three trips have been to the north, and I will probably be going Shardlow/ Foxton locks etc.

Yes, might do that as well, I came semi-close to doing it earlier this year from Sharpness with another boater who had already booked a pilot for the trip. Bit of a strange story, the first time I met him he told me his plans and then did everything possible to dissuade me from coming along (even though I hadn't mentioned once that I wanted to), the next day he was all over me like a rash telling me how good it would be if we did it together. But by this stage I had decided I didn't much care for the chap so I made my excuses and headed back up the Severn.

Well, I'm at Milton tonight so I will be back on the Trent and Mersey main line tomorrow, will do the badlands of Stoke in the morning while the scrotes are still tucked up in bed to save having to get the knife out. I absolutely loved the Caldon Canal, I definitely think it's the most beautiful canal I've ever been on. I will almost certainly be back at some point in the future. Was rather surprised to see a fuel boat (Halsall) approaching this morning so I flagged them down and filled up from them, a really nice couple. They said it was the first time they'd been on the Caldon with the fuel boat (they'd done it with their last boat) and they had already had problems bottoming out so fingers crossed for them. I don't know where to go next, except that I will be turning left at Etruria Junction, I'm still thinking of a run down to London via Shardlow, Foxton, Watford etc. But I might change my mind, in these days of equal rights that's a man's prerogative too.

Two things i have learnt from this thread, the caldon looks lovely and i will more than likely head up that way next summer and the towpaths are full of counters, spotted two on the weekend, one just north of hawkesbury junction and other on the junction, not the same as the one you took a photo off as they didnt have the solar and thing on the side, but they haad the magic eye, might go back and walk past a few times to screw with crt.

Come on Stabby, where are you?
Bearing in mind I saw Jane disappear into the murky depths the other day, we're getting worried.
Where've you reached and where are you heading?
