My mum is 97 and is still managing to live on her own with a little help from visitors. She lives a life pretty much in front of the TV which gives her a lot of joy. She can still do basic things around the house so still enjoys a feeling of independence. I suspect that as soon as she can no longer hang onto that thread of independence, she will go down hill quickly. However you do hear of some elderly thriving on the social contact they get in care homes. I suppose it all depends on what makes you tick. What I am pretty sure of is that a positive frame of mind is everything. Once you believe you have nothing to live for, the body gives up. The biggest cause of suffering is stress and doom and gloom. The mass media do this very well.

A while back I was pondering whether humans are actually ‘better off’ than apes? Are we happier?
Apes don’t worry about money (no need to be part of a corrupt machine). When they become old and feeble they will probably get taken out quickly by a big cat so probably don’t suffer for long (no need for an NHS). They spend most of their time chilling out. Ok, maybe the odd punch up, but things get resolved without the need for a judge or nuclear deterrent. They live with nature and don’t threaten their environment or planet with extinction.
Ironically humans are the biggest threat to this lifestyle and their survival and happiness.
Would I want to live a more ape like life in my next life? Hmm...not sure. Certainly more so if humans weren’t in it in our current form.

Wildlife lives every minute of every day on a knife edge between survival and death. I think I 'll stick to worrying about paying my gas bills Rog

Certainly more so if humans weren’t in it in our current form. Well pretty soon in our relatively long existence antibiotics will cease to work, expensive operations will then be untenable, anything that could be treated with antibiotics will run it's course (I'd have died at 45) and the nhs and beyond will become pretty well useless and cheaper to run. That should help world population numbers too. People will have to become more fatalistic.

That always reminds of the man tieing up his trainers as a lion is stalking him and a pal.
"You can't outrun a lion" his mate says.
"I know, but I only have to outrun you"

They seem pretty chilled out most of the time until hormones or hunger kick in. A bit like us really. ;-) I doubt they also worry about long term suffering at old age, politics, religion, armageddon, what Mr Trump is up to....

Lethal injection for anyone who's a hinderance / not able support themselves! Wildlife have it right...Survival of the fittest, tailenders meet their makers! The only problem with going that far is that you could end up being very lonely in this life and be continually looking behind your back. I think maybe somewhere in the middle might work. Perhaps that’s what we have got now? Survival of the kindest might also work in another life if everyone learnt to play by the same rules and understanding.

Apes don’t worry about money Pöh! What do apes know about happiness? Those multi-cellular critters are far too complicated. To find real happiness all you need to be is an amoeba
