I was wondering which yard would be best to build a custom 50ft barge to top specifications. I have not looked into it much as I'm not in a position to have a new boat built but I thought it might be an interesting topic. I'd go for these people I think. Mainly because I recently passed the Thames launch at Kingston and it is a nice item. I reckon there might be a lot of filler in there though.. www.ctomsandson.co.uk/current-projects/river-thames-boat-project/They have also built a steel replica of a Thames barge which looks good. Here's an original one (Xylonite) I got a pic of yesterday

as I'm not in a position to have a new boat built With alot of your time spent working undercover for Mi6 over here in the UK... Why not sell your Monaco based Benetti super-yacht & sack all the man servents to free up some cash and time to enable you to build a new boat? Perhaps include into the design an espionage room so you could 'work from home' more

Most of my SIS work is in-field operations so the boat would not be a suitable work place. OK for debriefing but you cannot protect the vulnerable British people from bad things by sitting around in a boat.

As you didn't say in the UK, I have the following as a suggestion, as that is where I will have my next boat made, as soon as I have some luck in the Loto : www.scheepsreparatiefriesland.nl/?l=2Peter.

If they're too busy at the previous place, I will have no problem getting these guys to build my future barge either. It's a pitty that there's no English version of their site, but the pictures are clear enough, and don't require translation. They can build any shape, the boats they build are designed by different architects, that's choice is in the clients hands. www.helldorferlasbedrijf.nl/scheepsbouw.htmPeter.

Some interesting designs there www.helldorferlasbedrijf.nl/rondvaart.htmCould be arranged into quite a nice boat for the Thames. Maybe a bit awkward to get in and out of for locks but probably manageable. And less windows. And a wheelhouse. And its the wrong shape. Etc. It is my intention to retire on a boat on the Thames again once all my MI6 work had been done and I have reduced the UK threat level to "oh don't worry about it dear". Should take another 15 years . then I need to look for the ideal pleasure residential boat for one person.

I've always thought that if budget wasn't an issue I would go with a Dutch builder. It's rare to see a dutch boat that doesn't look awesome.

The Dutch have always been very good steel boat builders ........ Interestingly though, on their site, one of the boats was designed by a British Naval architect.

I found c toms randomly from seeing one of their boats and researching. Not sure if there are many other quality steel boat builders about.

They make some decent barges. The FCN is a pretty good boat although its not got the grace of a dutch boat - its a bit boxy.
I was told the FCN was based on Pickwell and Arnold barges (which is what I live on)
FCN is built to a higher RCD specification but looks quite similar so it might be true.
