Sorry I have been concentrating on trying to keep the boat going straight, birdbrain. You need some of these

Culverts are C&RT assets, like locks, bridges, tunnels etc. They are subject to routine inspection to ensure safety (at least that is the information given to me by C&RT staff). I would hope that an area of dampness around a culvert being reported, would quickly involve an additional inspection. As with virtually everything in life, a problem ignored can only get worse. I would be interested to view any records of inspections of culvert 29, and any reports of leakage before making a sound judgement. But superficially I would have hoped this sort of thing would be caught by early intervention and preventative maintenance. Rog This is exactly right, I can take you to two places on the L&L where you can watch the water running out of the canal down a bank. Cart know about these but their answer was to lower the level of the canal, at best a temporary solution. When they actually breach they will cost a lot more than fixing them now. But there is no joined up thinking or long term planing in cart, so they are doomed to lurch from one emergency to the next.

I think there is joined up thinking and the degrading of the canal system is deliberate - perhaps a way to promote a wider discussion about what to actually do about it long term.

No shit Sherlock, in the articles of incorporation it was agreed that maintenance wou,od decline 15% year on year or was it 20%. Anyway this was what the government agreed to, so,the declining maintenance that boaters are witnessing around the system is a consequence of this. So your not kidding that the degrading of the system is deliberate.

So why are you saying it's surprising ? I'm not, I'm saying its a disgusting way to treat an historic waterways network.

True but I think the thinking is very joined up myself.

True but I think the thinking is very joined up myself. Not in the maintenance dept.

I think the maintenance problem is deliberate and I don't think it's a funding problem.

I think the maintenance problem is deliberate and I don't think it's a funding problem. Agreed, but the mistake I think your making is thinking that cart mangament convey to the humble bank staff what their aims are.

I think the bank staff know what's going on.
I actually believe that things like the Middle which branch breach and the latest problem on the L&L could, ironically, be good for the future of the system because it brings more people into the topic. People who had never noticed canals before may become interested.

As someone on canalworld put it a while ago:
I really hate it when other people play with my train set but I realise that if they didn't I could not possibly afford to play with it by myself.

I can't comment on houses as I know nothing about them.
