Canal = Ganges. Which is the filthiest open sewer? Reminds me of Russ Abbott singing "Burnley is Babylon!"

I *am* the crew on this occasion! I used to have the kids along most trips, but since they have discovered girls, cars and alcohol, suddenly "a week away with the old man" doesn't have quite the same appeal! Doing the Leicester Ring now, going to take about three weeks over it. Then I'm going down to London to do the Thames. Well, that's the plan anyway.

Ha! We might even be able to intercept you. But not for about 4 weeks; considering our escape via a tunnel - like one does from a prison! Now that Britain is isolated from Europe.

Time for an update... I'm in Loughborough tonight. It is one of the peculiarities of the English language that a place name can be spelt "Loughborough", yet be pronounced Luffburra. On both of the last two days, I have worked the locks with two very friendly couples, which makes life a lot easier for a single hander. Here is the boat I shared with today. A really nice crew. Today, I used a long throw windlass on short throw winding gear, as a result of which I shredded my thumb. So I wrapped my thumb up with kitchen towel and gaffer tape, and as a result of that I lost my handhold while crossing the same lock gate, fell awkwardly off of the balance beam and I've broken a couple of ribs. For tonight I've numbed the pain with alcohol, but I think I'll be here for a few weeks, I certainly couldn't push open a lock gate at the moment. Still, no worries. The River Soar is absolutely beautiful. The first time I've been on a river, and a real enjoyment!

sorry to hear about your problems, I hope you have enough food to stay put for a while? Thanks, yes I'm fine, have enough food to last for weeks, near full water and diesel tanks and I'm on a 14 day mooring so I'll be fine. There's even a Tesco and a preserved steam railway just down the road, what more could a man ask for?

Ouch! Bust ribs need plenty of juice to keep the pain at bay. I picked up my first boat related injury a few weeks back - I was coiling up the hose at Yarwell lock, the tap is by the landing stage, bit of a tit in a trance moment and I walked backwards clouting my calf on the t bar of the mooring bollard, God knows how I managed it but it hurt like fuck! Next day I had to get me hair cut in Stanground, the Woolpack has an ace mooring at the bottom of their garden, ideal, get me Barnet done, spend the rest of the day in the pub as I'm like Samson after a haircut. On the way to the barbers I got burned up by an old griper on a motability scooter, such was the extent of my injury. It's only just easing off now 3 and a bit weeks later! Get well soon and all that bollocks

Chagall is worried about your food stocks, I wondered if you had a well stocked bar

I feel for you. It's happened to the missus a few times. She soon learned to turn the windlass so far, then pull the side to get it past the lock beam. Experience: something you get just after you needed it.
