Well done Jeff, at least he has good taste (apart from in men ). I'm not suggesting solar is bad, or isn't right for some. I am saying the panels are ugly. I am saying I dislike the current trend of solar fascists. Rog

Are you sure it isnβt 160 slaps with a wet fish? Clearly engineering units arenβt your strong point. Along with a lot of other things of course. Stick to your amateur ramblings dumb boy π Ammeter ramblings.

They can be reasonably hidden. I have three hidden in boxes, and am happy for the 160 amps per day at the cost of someone moaning about them being ugly. π Smartguage are crap. See the plumber on the other site has bought another smartguage, third one now and all three are broken hhahahaha. Ha

We've got a little 30w flexible that sits behind the windscreen, it's good enough to top the batteries up while she sits idle - on arrival I disconnect it (I've got it on a 5a deck plug; flip the panel over and disconnect it) and chuck it in the car while we are out cruising. 3a is worth toss all unless it is trickle charging the batteries. Well pleased with the cyrix 120 that has been a mega useful addition as the farty solar will charge both battery banks in conjunction with the cyrix. mouse has been banned from gluing flexible solar panels to the superstructure of any boat I am involved in, like dogless and Telemachus Jeff it's purely on aesthetics.

I am saying I dislike the current trend of solar fascists. Rog Solar fascists have always existed, 20 years ago when I stuck 5 x 100w panels on our Broads cruiser all I ever for was "Waste of time and money" or " They'll never work mate" I even remember one prat suggesting that because his little 5w panel couldn't make any impression on his battery I wouldn't get anything from my 500w PV array Phil

I wonder how long our 2 leisure batteries will last now that we're parked up for 4 weeks. There is a house not too far from the canal so maybe we can run an extension cable from them to our boat after a week and half so the 'intelligent charger' can do its thing. This will be our longest drain on the batteries ever, just sat here and not driving. Get one of these. www.screwfix.com/p/evolution-evo-system-gen2800-generator-output-2-8kw/74962You'll be the talk of the cut, and best of all you won't be able to hear them talking about you π’π»π

I think he should run his engine for charging.
This gives a reason to indulge in the oil changing fetish more often.

I will shortly be removing the 1 kw of flexible panels.................and replacing it with over 3 KW of solar panels for my electric drive system, you can all moan all you want but, I will be cruising for free and silently which is all I care about. Just wait Rog when the high pollution zones come in and you have hand pull your boat through them!!!!

By the time the Low Emissions Zones come in there will be massive unemployment due to brexit and immigration/reproduction problems which means there will be fit young males hanging around by bridges offering to bow haul your boat through the LEZ. Like the old tunnel Leggers of yesteryear. They will only need beer money and maybe a bowl of oats. Certainly more reliable than ugly solar panels made in china, batteries made in china, motor made in india, toothed drive belt made in china, speed controller made in china and a propeller made in china And weed made in england !

I got a 135w flexi plus mppt controller for ours, can't say it's ugly, no more noticeable than owt else on the roof, e.g. Roof box, plank, ropes. I expect to benefit when we are stuck somewhere for a few days. If we are moving the outboard puts out enough for the night. When we had the dc22 I used to charge up 3 110ah batteries at home, the little Honda 10 only put out 5ah so we would run out of power after 3 weeks.

For all those engine running fascists (& especially for dogless) that feel the need to inflict their fumes & noise on the rest of us, I don't care how ugly you think they are, it's my boat & your opinion simply doesn't count. Turned engine off yesterday about 3pm, telly has been on most of the day, batteries are down to 13.0V

If Newcastle Brown is your drink of choice then your opinion is worthless.

Turned engine off yesterday about 3pm, telly has been on most of the day, batteries are down to 13.0V While I agree that aesthetically putting solar panels on a narrowboat is a bit like putting a bumper sticker on a Rolls-Royce, the point has already been made that many boats need to run their engines anyway to provide hot water.
