Well, after CRT cancelled our Liverpool booking we HAD still planned on going up the Rochdale and back... given the fires going on, we're going to delay that for 10 days or so and hatched a plan with another boat last night (admittedly in the pub) to take a jaunt up to Ripon while the rivers are low and calm.
Canal planner says we should do it in 4 days tops - any pointers from those with more experience than us?

Funnily enough we were thinking same, although it will be August (assuming we can get over the Pennines!). Can’t give any advice as last time I did the trip to Ripon I was only 18 and that is a VERY long time ago. I don’t recall any dramas though.

Looks like it's going to be "Poof-fest" in Ripon this year then.

There certainly won't be any 'fresh' in the Calder, Aire or the Ouse this coming week thanks to the recent lack of rain, . . but you won't be finding anything that qualifies as low and calm when you pen out into the Ouse at Goole or Selby to run up to Naburn. We're right on the top of this lot of Springs (tides) this weekend with some even bigger tides predicted for the weekend of the 14th and 15th. Smallest of the next Neaps is weekend of the 7th and 8th. None of these tides will be anything that you won't be able to cope with, . . just don't let it all take you by surprise when you get to either Selby or Goole on the way up.

does anyone know if a 60 footer can make it? - the locks according to the book are wide enough to go diagonally but unlike the calder and hebble where it says a 60 footer can do it, the Nicholson doesn't mention it on this occasion....

Done the tidal bit twice in cabin cruisers. It's fun getting back into Selby! Wonderful trip. We've not had a hint of smoke here, wind is blowing it east over Manchester and its calmed down a bit at Saddleworth for the moment.
