Can washer Joshers with overpowered vintage engines just stay in their fucking marinas, I'm tired of being passed by these mugs who got conned into fitting a totally inappropriate engine because its got shiny brass bits on it, and now can't control their tickover speed, and slam moored boats into the bank, and stretch their mooring ropes every time they pass.
Having a 60 HP Gardner in a narrow boat doesn't make you a great boater, it makes you an idiot that knows nothing about boat engines.
Just fuck off, then when you get there fuck off some more.
Rant over.

That's it you tell em Are you sure it was not a Kelvin K3? 4 pot Gardners don't have much bras or copper to polish. More of an aluminium thing going on. Unless its had retrofitted brass shit. And why can't you fucking tie your fucking boat up properly in the fucking first place

Excellent subject, excellent rant.
If it's a Gardner, tell them to buy a vintage bus instead.
If it's Kelvin then it should be in a 70 foot herring drifter.
I'm off to buy a mini digger to fit round my Kabota.

I didn't realise RW Davis built herring drifters. Sounds like a lot of fun at Marston Doles

Rant over. I’m inclined to agree, however having an overpowered vintage engine is not exclusive to washer joshers. Why anyone would want a smokey rumbley thumping oil-leaking thing it can’t imagine. But anyway, as a suggestion to alleviate your woes, why not just tie your boat up properly? With springs.

There's only one engine worth having in a narrowboat, and that's the engine out of an Austin Cambridge taxi.

Japanese engines are fine in one of these. In a Hudson it's a case of "fur coat and no knickers", as my Mum used to say.

There's a certain irony in having a boat built with pretend rivets all over it "because that's how boats used to be" and then putting a Japanese engine in it.

But since we didn’t style our boat “because that’s how boats used to be” I don’t really see your point. If we had wanted a boat styled on “how boats used to be” we would have a cabin of length 6’ with the rest a hold carrying coal or whatever. We wouldn’t have remote controlled central heating, an automatic washing machine and tumble drier, a shower, fridge, satellite TV etc etc. On the other hand, if I had an unfulfilled desire to be an undertaker, I would probably have a boat whose interior resembled a coffin.

I've got a Beta Kubota 90 (2011) Perkins P4 (~1960s?) Kubota marine 743cc twin (1980s?)
Previous propulsion engines
Lister LPW3 Petter PJ4 Sabb 2G Russell Newbery DM2 Lister SR2
So mainly British previously but when I put a new unit in my barge I went for Japanese mainly because my mum had a Beta Kubota BV1505 in a 55ft nb and we did a few years going round the system (I was at the time being deafened by the Russell Newbery in my own boat). Her little Kubota was a very reliable unobtrusive and quiet thing which didn't bat an eyelid and easily matched the propulsion abilities of my RN. Great engine at the end of the day and it did a LOT of work as she also used it for charging and hot water if we weren't moving that day.
If I was recommending a new unit for a boat I'd say Beta marine.
