Met a very nice lady with a north east accent at a lock this morning. She was off a small Sea Otter boat. Turned out she now lives in Sheffield.
We were chatting, as you do, about marinas as they're looking to move from Alvecote.
Fazeley Mill was mentioned as we are booked in there for a few days again this month.
The lady exclaimed that she'd met "two lovely boys" in Birmingham earlier this year, who moor there and strongly recommended it.
We were quickly able to identify who the two lovely boys were, and their boat, and she was full of praise as to how helpful and friendly both of them had been as they did locks.
Lovely to have such a genuine and unsolicited compliment don't you think.

"Boys" seems to suggest a certain youthfulness. Of course it may be relative. Was she very old?
Anyway, can you really trust the judgment of a Sea Otter owner?

That's a coincidence, earlier this year I met a couple of mincing jessies who moor at Fazeley Mill.

Actually thinking about it, we did follow a sea otter down Aston and it then pulled in with an electrical issue about half way down. Said it was an ongoing problem with alternator drive belt. He wasn’t too sure about how tight it should be. I had a look for him. Lots of black dust indicating belt slippage so I advised him to tighten it more.

Do they be stuck in the Tunnel of Standedge me wonders? they are not booked in till tomorrow. Yes and again on Monday t’other way. It seems Lock 9E is going to be closed at least another week and we don’t want to be hanging around on an unnavigable canal for that long, so we’ll have to go back the way we came. Pisser! And that means that to get across the Pennines we will have to risk the Rochdale! Gloom! Or just give up and head back to the safety of the South!

Enjoy the tunnel, it's fascinating. It's not like any other tunnel I've been through. It's weird being able to see the trains in the adjacent tunnel as you go through.

Lots of black dust indicating belt slippage so I advised him to tighten it more. I'd have gotten a new belt slung on. But what was the problem, was it askew? Rhetorical question. Just too loose I think. It was a fairly new belt apparently.

You made a hugely positive impression on the lady, whatever you did.
Having seen the last photo, I knew you weren't just a pretty face.

Normally the problem is that people don't realise that the belt needs to be re-tensioned three or four times after it is installed, and then at every service, and that when it is installed all of the pulleys need to be wiped off with petrol or some other type of spirit because the relatively unventilated confines of a narrowboat engine soon become covered in a light misting of oil.

Yes, although not usually in the case of polyvee. I’ve only adjusted our new polyvee belt once in the past 1500 hrs and that was when I installed it! In the case of v belts struggling to run a big alternator, I’m sure you are right.
