You made a hugely positive impression on the lady, whatever you did. Having seen the last photo, I knew you weren't just a pretty face. Rog Just my usual incredibly charming and modest self! And Jeff too of course! Women do always say that the most attractive men always turn out to be "on the other bus".

they are not booked in till tomorrow. Yes and again on Monday t’other way. It seems Lock 9E is going to be closed at least another week and we don’t want to be hanging around on an unnavigable canal for that long, so we’ll have to go back the way we came. Pisser! And that means that to get across the Pennines we will have to risk the Rochdale! Gloom! Or just give up and head back to the safety of the South! Will they put out the red carpet for you in Hebden Bridge, I wonder?

I'd have gotten a new belt slung on. But what was the problem, was it askew? Rhetorical question. Just too loose I think. It was a fairly new belt apparently. Tooloose? That's a place in France.

Normally the problem is that people don't realise that the belt needs to be re-tensioned three or four times after it is installed, and then at every service, and that when it is installed all of the pulleys need to be wiped off with petrol or some other type of spirit because the relatively unventilated confines of a narrowboat engine soon become covered in a light misting of oil. Yes, although not usually in the case of polyvee. I’ve only adjusted our new polyvee belt once in the past 1500 hrs and that was when I installed it! In the case of v belts struggling to run a big alternator, I’m sure you are right. The polyvee belt being adopted by motor manufacturers is the reason cars are now full of kit we could never have dreamed of previously. Once upon a time a vee belt could transmit no more than around 70a before it disappeared in a cloud of acrid smoke. The advent of polyvee meant massive alternators running huge electrical loads along with air conditioning compressors became viable - even on whizzy little 80bhp 1.2 litre engines. Gone are the days of the screeching auxiliary belt on start up thanks to big beefy auto tensioners. Progress 👍

I've met a few boaters who have encountered TellyMackus and have asked me what he is like, and I always say "He's a lovely bloke, the supercilious toffee-nosed twerp thing he does on Thunderboat is all an act".

Or is my towpath appearance all an act, with my internet persona being the real me? Who can say!

We don’t have to decide for another few days and I’ll check with CRT before we turn right at Piccadilly. At least going downhill you take your water with you.

The Rochdale is fine, book a volocky to come up through Newton heath, you might get Ian Mack, a font of wisdom and information, and house trained. There's one day of grot, then a couple of hours through Rochdale, once you have cleared the bridge at Belfield its wonderful, stunning views of the Pennines and the approaching Summit Gap. Dont be mardy!
