I have never hired a boat in my life as I bought my first narrow boat aged 20 but I am considering a hire boat holiday in France with woman and kids to make sure we like the canals over there before dumping a hundred grand on another barge.
Thinking of two weeks next easter holidays. Probably in some pos splitter / grp cruiser of some sort. Somewhere in burgundy.
Obviously its a bit different to Englandland but are there any fundamental basic rules for being a hire boater which I should be aware of?

At one time Chris and I intended taking our first boat to France. Spent 2 years doing a lot if research, even exchanged e-mails with Terry Darlington, however Chris's declining health stopped us. As part of the research we got sone DVDs of Le Canal du Midi and Le Canal du Nivernais We bought them on-line web address www.videoactive.co UK They give you quite an insight to the French waterways Phil

Watched some little day hire boat today hammer headlong into the side of a moored trip boat today. If you practice lots you could be that good!

We've just seen at a lock a woman off a boat telling her companion the (metal) beams and gates are over 250 years old. We saw the beams had 1973 weld-written on them, and a 2007 plate on the lock gates. She also opened the top gate paddle first and had water splashing all over the front of the boat, and then had a wander to the ground paddle and thought about winding it. I saw some people on the Thames today near Walton who were all dressed up as pirates but the boat did not have a plank on the roof. That's really bad. I mentioned it to the skipper in the lock and he said "I wish some of these people would walk the plank they are really pissing me off mate". I considered giving him my plank but I need it to get off the boat with. I told him he maybe able to find a plank in the river. After that I attended to my boat's ropes.
