I have a mate who''s been living on, and single handing his narrow boat (55 feet) since 2003.
He's done quite a lot of the system and is undaunted by new waterways.
He''s done the K&A three times for example, when many boaters with crew I have met have told me they turned round at Newbury because it was too difficult.
He told me a few years ago that I should watch out for blokes who have waterway badges all over their hats or clothing, or even boats, because in his experience, the more they had and the more they pontificate and 'shared their knowledge' the less they travel.
An amusing theory over a beer, but I never thought about it too much.
However recently I have noticed more and more folk on social media who appear eager to give advice, but when questioned have very little actual experience or knowledge.
Is this a natural consequence of the Internet age, or are we all know-alls at heart?

Definitely appears to be more prevalent on the internet. However some of this can be explained by the much simpler access that the internet (especially forums) gives us to someone who really knows what they are talking about.

I don't pontificate over canal matters as I'm too inexperienced.
I have met a few people who have taken much delight in telling me something when I know from here they are wrong but just nod then laugh later.
just like the boater that called me nervous and scared wed night that has never even touched a tiller in vein.
and also the other night a boater who should be quite knowledgable told me restrictions will be put in place at croften next week but they won't close it. as a crt bod told him.
I knew there was already a restriction in place as I get all the notices and by the time I had driven home they had actually closed it.
there are people on here I trust to take advice from and there are boaters in the real world where we'll they can keep their knowledge to themselves.

I was chatting to a boater who'd recently done the K&A and asked where we'd been. Told them the L&L and they said "We won't go there it's too difficult". I suggested it wasn't any more troublesome than the K&A and they'd enjoyed that. They said a boater friend had warned them to stay away which surprised me. I enquired what bad experiences he'd encountered, to be told he'd never done it Rog

I have enjoyed the L & L twice and the Huddersfield narrow twice and many other canals around the country in fact I dont think I have hated any of the canals I have done. Rivers though...................

The type of people the post is about is the reason I recently changed forums. At least here I know that no one knows everything(anything).

I have done the L&L from Leeds to Wigan probably before you were born and certainly before you ever had a boat. 1974 IIRC. In those days you just got on with Bingley 5 rise, you didn’t get all limp and poofy and have to have a lock keeper telling you what to do. And we did the L&L from Burnley to just short of Leeds in a hire boat in around 2007 which was probably after you were born, but before you had a canal boat.
