For the last several years, my brother and his wife come visit us once or twice. They find where we are, book nearby accommodation and we have a couple of days jollity.
My brother always loves the wildly varying places he gets to visit as a consequence. He loves the way boaters just travel where the water takes them, and as a result visit places as a tourist, that tourists never visit.
Additionally, if one chose to visit a town it can easily fail to meet expectations, however 'just stumbling across' a town means there are no expectations we find.
Several examples spring to mind from this year's travels alone. Barnoldswick, Bingley, Chorley and Burnley were all bustling entertaining places to call at, without wishing to plan a day out to any of them.
As it's quiet on here I was musing what favourite 'little gems' of places others enjoyed but only visited because the water took them?

we would never plan a holiday in Brum or Manchester but after visiting both by canal I would recommend at least a weekend in both.

Burton and Leicester are particularly enjoyable in my view.
