An odd day of reflection.
Over the day I have been watching the various commemorations. The great ceremonies at Westminster Abbey and at Thiepval.
Over the years I have visited a few of the memorials, The Menin Gate, Tyne Cot and Thiepval itself. The ones that haunt me are not the great memorials but the little quiet spots in the Somme valley.
Sights that make my throat tighten and my eyes prick .
The small peaceful enclosures with just a handful of white stones, lying in precise rows before a tall cross. You walk among them and see the same date and realise they lie in lines close to where they fell. So young. Comrades in eternity.

For 2 weeks no TV, son only has netflix and I have no idea how to access. I have not seen any of the programmes. Last year I did the battlefields of France ..2nd World War..I was moved to tears by the small burial sites...so many lost ones..each cross representing a mothers grief. I listened and learnt far more being there than dry history at school I intend one day to go to the World war 1 sites. We must never forget.

We did a tour of the world 1 battlefields etc some years ago.I coped fairly well until the Menin Gate & I just became a blubbering wreck.Grandad on mum's side lost an arm when he went over the top to rescue a buddy. Life was hard for the family after that.

Good sentiments Foxey ...... but for another day. Yesterday was more a day for us ordinary, little people, to remember, mourn and regret our losses ....... not to apportion the blame.

As an ex soldier with to many medals for my own liking war is the last resort. World War 1 for me was the worst war ever! Modern weapons and ancient non understanding generals, and field marshals a true disaster. Luckily some good came from it, social changes started to occur and the world changed a bit. Let those young soldiers know they didnt die in vain, and for some the world is a better place because of their sacrifice. We can never pay them back and we must never forget what they did for us
