There has been a half arsed attempt at dredging on the GU in the Milton Keynes area, the dredgings have been put back in the waterway on the offside behind a screen of fabric held up by posts. A lot of areas have been missed on this dredge, moored boats were just dredged around, and this length is by no means back to proper depth .
I'm wondering if this way of dumping the dredgings by narrowing the waterway is a good plan, A. You don't gain any extra water capacity B. You can only do it once, or until you have filled in all the banks back to the original dimensions, and C. When the fabric degrades the whole lot will collapse back into the waterway.
And D, the new infilled bank will be highly fertile mud and will grow like crazy, CRT is already letting the offside bank overgrow the canal, this is going to make it worse.

Seems to be the current method. The top end of the Trent & Mersey is undergoing identical work. It seems to work, but time will tell. I suppose the wildlife pressure groups will be happier with the method. I'm just glad they're dredging Rog

The emphasis now seems to be in letting wildflowers/weeds/grasses grow without check..for so long all was hacked back which saw a decline in bees n butterflies and now the pendulum has swung the other way. In a few years I hope we will achieve a balance...

It can't be a long term method as you can only do it once, after you have filled in all the eroded banks you then start filling in the canal itself.
