Does food waste regularly get dumped into canals? Is it a coded way of saying "Don't feed the ducks"? Any ideas?

Food waste comes in several different forms, and from different sources or orifices. Some people are even known to store quantities of a certain type in the otherwise unoccupied space between their ears.

No, . . . it's just an older local authority sign that was adapted for whatever use it's now put to before July 2012.

Is it to do with feeding ducks? That's what I thought it might mean, although "Do not feed the ducks" would be slightly less ambiguous.

The intent is probably related to bird feeding, though no byelaw exists as such, so they are doubtless seeking to rely on byelaw 40. “No person shall throw or discharge into or on to any canal any animal (whether alive or dead) or any rubbish, stones or other material of any kind whatsoever or deposit such materials so as to be washed or carried into any canal by floods or other means, or in any wise cause obstruction in any canal.” Not specifically food related mind you, but that would be covered.

Well would 'food' brought especially to feed the birds be seen as waste?...eg sweetcorn?

It is about dumping bread (feeding ducks is not the right description).
Not sure where you saw it but there is a sign telling people not to feed the ducks in about 6 different languages in Alperton. Food dumping is a real problem around places like Southall and alperton. Its the volume of waste dumped - it really is bad. There used to be a whole colony of swans living near bulls bridge who were obviously sustained by the waste from local restaurants.
Sad really.

No one will be prosecuted though as CRT do not, and have never sought to enforce their bylaws.
For some no doubt dubious reason.

No one will be prosecuted though as CRT do not, and have never sought to enforce their bylaws. For some no doubt dubious reason. It might have been helpful if Mr Brooks had followed up on the disclosure of this fact with a question as to the rationale. www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/prosecutions_for_breach_of_bylawThe closest we have to a hinted answer lies in argument before County Courts, in one case the judge acknowledging the authority's stated rationale for using s.8 powers instead - because the penalty was deemed "derisory" - as perfectly reasonable. So the "dubious reason" appears to be that the sanctions are insufficiently severe for CaRT to consider prosecution worth the investment.
