Warland reservoir, above my mooring has dried out. One of the reasons the Rochdale Canal is closed, its one of the feeders. It's revealed a First World War air defence barge. If they can resurrect Bluebird this is a doddle for some of you old boat aficionados.

I wonder why they needed a barge "to defend it from the air"? There's a track running across the dam wall and around at least one side, any anti aircraft stuff could have been mounted there, on solid ground. Curious.

From where? It's landlocked at maybe 1100ft, canal summit is just above 600ft, the track from the A58 is maybe 2 miles away following the contour. Its maybe 1 mile down the track to Warland Gate, lock 35/36 where my mooring is. How many reservoirs got bombed in the first world war anyway. Or anything else in the UK, especially in the North West?

Maybe the original source for the description air defence barge needs cross examining. It may as well be made up. Rather than say "oh look now the reservoir has dried up there's some old bits of scrap boat visible" its was more interesting to bullshitify it a bit.

That's what John said earlier on. Anti seaplane wire anchorage boats.
