Thinking we may pop up to Nottingham from the T&M for a couple of weeks later this week. Need to be back at Barton for Bss early September. Is there anything Trent specific we need to know? Have been on Thames, Severn, Avon etc so not new to rivers. Have anchor and life jackets. Thanks, Ian.

The top end of the Trent from Derwent Mouth down to Nottingham is pretty benign. At Sawley, two pubs one near the Marina entrance is modern (Plank and leggit) chain type with food (can't remember which one) but a better beer pub is (or used to be) the one a short walk in the direction of Long Eaton (I can't remember it's name) more a traditional pub that also does (again or used to) beer festivals. Possibly why I don't remember it's name, after one festival I could barely remember my own !!! Good bus connections between Stoke and Long Eaton along the road past the Marina. Trent mouth next stop, no problems but if you want to pop up the Erewash the entrance is under a little humpback bridge just next to one of the pubs there. Can't comment on the pubs as there were too many gongoozelers (or maybe it was gonboozelers) there for my taste, but it's an interesting little area for a walk round. You hear horror stories of Thrumpton weir but you don't go near it if you are going down the Trent ..... just keep to the left of the island with the big sailing club building. Next section is quite bucolic and very pleasant. Beeston is a good stop. Don't remember the pub particularly so it probably was neither too bad or very good. In Nottingham a must is the trip to Jerusalem pub .... even if just to say you have been Lots of other interest. on the canal after poplar corner there is (or was) one of the biggest Army Surplus stores I know of ...... somewhere near the cattle market bridge ..... very good source of those invaluable items that you are sure will come in useful one day

The Nottingham yatch club on cranfleet cut is my favourite drinking hole on that stretch. It's only open weekends but friendly place with lots of nice boaters. The river sections are alright as it is at the moment but get a bit hairy in the winter. What's the name of your boat, I'll say hello if I see you.
