Winter has arrived already (well the BH Weekend). 10 degrees and pissing it down. Got thoroughly drenched today, hailstones, thunder, lightning. Now all cosy in the metal shed with the heating on - using 'free electric'! We’ve actually got a boat here just North of MK with a burning stove. Well there is some smoke coming out of the top of the boat, so to be fair, it is only an assumption. Just got back to our boat after a nice romantic dinner in the pub with Chris. I thought it would add to the romance if I also lit the log burner and snuggled up with her with a glass of wine. Then I thought...fuck it....can’t be arsed...

I don't like marinas as a generality. Either curtains shut, or just views of neighbouring boats very close to your windows. However Fazeley Mill is the best we've used (been twice this year). Easy for public transport and good shopping nearby. There is an obvious downside... but Nick's not been there when we have so far Rog

What’s ‘central heating’? Actually we have a back boiler on our Morso stove with a gravity fed system (with a radiator in the bedroom area). It works really well. No pumps involved and the whole boat is toasty after an hour. I actually enjoy lighting the stove, I guess it’s a neanderthal thing.

Some boats have it but they call the system by fancy names.

FFS the gremlins are back...
Central heating is somethink that provides heating with miniscule effort, some boats have, mine will.

Maybe that's because of the boats. The immediate neighbours are lovely, I spend quite a lot of time on their boat chatting and whatever but yes, too many folk stuffed in too small a place. There's been a noticeable rise in full time liveaboards that never go anywhere since I got here 2 years ago. Time to bugger off is fast approaching.

To be fair, if you are on a tight budget then a log burner is a good option. If you are prepared to forage around for wood, it’s free! The option of both is good too.

I think you will find that where they store caravans, they are in close proximity. Obviously not so much when they are transported to a caravan site and accommodated. Well marinas are largely a place to store boats which are rarely accommodated. I hate marinas...but serve a purpose if you need to be away from your boat for a long period.

Yep. I couldn't see myself ever living in a marina AND looking at a boat two foot away. I don't understand how it is allowed.

We have quite a quirky mooring at Norbury on the Shroppie,it's on the old Newport line. The dry dock at the end of the mooring is actually the first lock.We have water/lecky & it's quiet. The next door pub(The Junction)keeps sensible hours & sells good beer & good food. Before Norbury,we spent 12 years at Titford Pumphouse off the BCN old line.Marinas just don't appeal for long term moorings, but we often have a few days in marinas when out cruising-in order to use the facilities or leave the boat if we need to nip home.

There's a fair mix of ages, a lot of retired who can't manage the locks anymore, but plenty of others who just like living on boats or couldn't afford a house. Renting houses is so insecure these days at least if you get chucked out of a marina you still have your home and the neighbours don't play dance or rap music full volume at 4am.
