I'm posting this in a semi pissed state from Kerala, India, apologies if there are any typos.
I've been here for 3 days. Arrival was a disaster. The room I'd booked didn't exist and trudging around looking for a room with a 15kg backpack and another small rucksack, plus my surfboard in the blazing sunshine wasn't the best fun I've ever had in my life. That particular episode ended well, I retired to a coffee place for shade and an Americano. Within minutes the word spread, a tourist was looking for a room. Before the coffee had cooled sufficiently to sip the first of a stream of Indians came through the door, eager to tell me how fantastic the rooms were they had available for rent. Within minutes I'd struck a deal, following serious bartering, for 34 nights with private bathroom, wifi, hot water, balcony an agreement to change the towels and sheets once a week, for 8500 rupees, around 90 quid, subject to viewing the room. Had a look at the room and apart from a couple of dodgy steps up to it that could cause problems after beers all was well, so paid the guy.
I won't dwell on the state of my surfboard when I took it out of it's bag other than it's a disgrace that a major airline like Etihad makes you sign a disclaimer form absolving itself from responsibility for damage in transport in this day and age. It will take 5 days to fix and if wages weren't so low here, would be a complete write off, with no responsibility to the carrier.
Anyway on to my main point. I don't know, maybe I'm out of touch. The last time I worked in a full time job, 16 years ago I was on about 35K. I thought that was quite good money. I'm not in the Seychelles this is India, where if you fancy the local breakfast it can be had for 30 pence. Because my board is in for repair I'm spending lots of time in bars and restaurants, meeting lots of people. The Welsh guy wasn't fretting that his 500k house sale hadn't gone through because it was just one of many. The German girl who owned the large 'eco resort' nearby didn't seem to care less about her business, more about how much beer she could sink as quickly as possible. The Australian film editor of 'Australian Masterchef' (very fuckable, but not yet) was moaning about paying 100,000 Aus Dollars tax in a year, but she couldn't be arsed to keep her expense receipts.
I don't know, I find all of this quite bewildering.

Maybe both are on the £100ks or maybe in the £100s. Doesn’t matter too much, you get used to whatever it is. The only important thing, as Mr Mcawber once said, is the the expenditure doesn’t exceed the income. The scale factor is unimportant.

I'm still living in the caravan and moving on every two weeks, I've seen stuff that should not be happening in the UK (in my opinion). I'll do a post about it once I'm afloat. Mcawber can do one.....

Mcawber can do one..... why are you moving on every 2 weeks ? I've just pulled onto a caravan and camping club approved CS for a month initially. I've spoken to the owner about over wintering here and he's fine with it. £70/week with electric and clean toilets and shower block.

It always baffles me when I see some poor old biddy from the Indian sub-continent stood at a bus stop and shivering in the freezing cold/ pissing rain in January or February, why they don't just sell their shitty little terraced house in Tipton or Willenhall or wherever, cash in the equity and fuck off home to live the life of Reilly in the sunshine in a palace with a dozen servants.

Interesting choice of words.

I could have said "and return to her homeland" which means the same thing but requires more effort.

I could have said "and return to her homeland" which means the same thing but requires more effort. They are not the same, the first implies no right to be here, the second that this is her home, but she could return to the land of her birth, and that makes the rash assumption that she was born there and not here. This country is now her home.

Whatever. I just wonder why they tolerate the misery of a British Winter when they could be enjoying the benefits of arbitrage.
