I wonder who gets the money?
I would hope some of it would go to the victim of the accident. It sounds like the trapdoor was opened out of her sight while she was browsing so I would have thought she would be in for quite a big payout as it was in no way her fault. A bit like someone taking a chair away just before you sit down. Nasty.

Will they be fining that stupid 64-year-old for not looking where they were going? That's a lot of money. I do hope I don't drop my pen on the floor, I dread to think what the fine will be for that.

If you engage in an activity involving small movements like wandering about looking at books having already confirmed visually that the immediate area is safe then it is reasonable to assume it is safe. If someone suddenly opens a hole in the floor behind you it is pretty likely you will fall into it if your current activity involves walking around in a limited area.
