you seem to have found a perfect spot to be participating in some fun jobs there. You're dead right Peter. I often end up totally knackered but I am very happy up here on Northern waters

When on my friend's 1200-tonner (circa 80 metres by 9 metres) travelling empty on the Hamm Canal in Germany, he had a pair of binoculars to check that the bow cabin got under a couple of bridges. The wheelhouse was down, and to ensure we got under the bridge he had to turn up the power and draw the stern down. It was a major coal mining area, and there had been considerable subsidence. That is the standard procedure in France to on the canals with about 3M50 clearance, not enough for an empty barge to get under. If the stern of an empty barge has a god fine shape, revving up about 3M before the front window of the wheelhouse will touch the bridge, will lower the stern between 20 and 30 cms, which is normally just enough to pass, never hesitate, or reduce revs, as that will demolish the wheelhouse in no time at all. When you hear slight scraping noises, add more revs, to give you the best chance of limiting the disaster. Peter.

I've not boated on European waterways yet but I remember seeing a lifting bridge in Paris a few years ago. The whole bridge deck was jacked up by two large hydraulic rams. Remained horizontal no tipping or swinging. I guess it had some guides as well. This to me was a beautiful thing and a very elegant solution to the problem.

This was most likely on the Canal Saint-Martin. Peter.

Yes it was. I was guilty of going on a trip boat (hangs head in shame) when first visiting Paris with the newly acquired woman about 10 years ago. Bloody hell is it that long.

Did you buy her directly of her parents ? Or was it an exchange against a couple of goats ? Btw, there's no need to be ashamed of having done this trip on a trip boat, I've done that too, and don't feel ashamed about it. Also a couple of times as pilot on hotel barges and on my own passenger barge, between the Port de l'Arsenal, and Bassin de la Villette. Peter.

Right so you did it the cheap way, was that because you didn't want to impress the newly acquired woman, with a private cruise on that tripboat, with just the 2 of you ? It must have been dreadful to find yourself surrounded by plebs and normal people, I hope they didn't bother you too much, you know what they're like, very little respect for the upperclass anymore overthere. Peter.
