For what's its worth this was my entry in Foxy's competition The foliage suggests that this photograph was not taken with the competition in mind, since the competition was not announced until the end of October. Disqualified. I genuinely took this with the competion in mind as soon as I saw them on Monday 3rd Sept between Shrewley and Hatton top lock Ref:http://thunderboat.boards.net/post/140581/thread - meant to be a link to the 9th post in the "Thunderboat Photo Competition 2018 - arranged by Foxy" thread Un- disqualifiedπ Admittedly at the time, if I knew how to post photos on the internet, I would have posted it here earlier instead of waiting for the 2018 competion to start & email it directly to the organiser, in which case it would have been disqualified & I would have to have posted another (not so good photo) - there but for the grace of god etcπ

I much prefer to see wrecks like that still in or by the canal rather than them being dragged out and destroyed never to be seen again by anyone anywhere ever.
They are part of the canal heritage. As long as not an obstruction to navigation they are an asset. OK so nobody wants to maintain them but they still exist at least a little bit.
Sorry that's one of my hobby horses.
I'd love to see all the old boats which would otherwise get destroyed hauled out and placed on the canal bank to be reclaimed by nature.
I like boats and looking at boats but also appreciate the power of nature to reclaim what humans have produced. I like to see deterioration and gradual degradation into constituent parts. Its beautiful.

Usually elm for old narrow boats I believe.
Elm wood burns like churchyard mould. Even the very flames are cold.

No idea - oak? Will have to wait for one of the more knowledgeable ones such as TD, to respond. They may even know the names and a bit of their history. I see Magnetman has already responded

Well since I spent hours tweaking this one (well ok, 3 minutes) here it is. Nostalgia for TD from the dark days of no colour.

Disqualified. in which case it would have been disqualified Competition rules said photo from 2018. NOT from the start of the announcement 4 weeks ago. And PREFERABLY with competition in mind. We all knew there was the chance of a photo comp coming up, which was why people started to ask "who's going to organise it?"

But you can't have a rule like that. It's like having a rule in football saying that the ball should PREFERABLY not be directed using the hands.

Hi, What wood are these boats made from? There's been a flurry of new members over this weekend, I wonder why? Perhaps it was the ad I put up in a corner shop in Skipton. However, I smell several rats.
