I've started making an investigation onto pubs between Autherley Junction and Stourport so that we have an inkling of what's to come. Starting at Stourport, 'walking' round to each pub with the Google Street View Man to see if they are pretty or grotty from the outside, I was distracted when I got to The Rock Tavern (closed? For Sale sign outside it) for beside it is a bridge and I felt the urge to look this up. This carried the Severn Valley Railway between Hartlebury and Bewdley. "There used to be a canal/rail interchange dock at this point; rusty mooring rings set into a high brick retaining wall recall busier times." (Pearson's Canal Companion). Hartlebury station is still 'live' and on the Droitwich Spa - Kidderminster - Stourbridge Junction - Birmingham railway. It looks like we'll be becoming familiar with this area between now and next Summer. Looking up the Severn Valley Railway, this map indeed shows that it used to run to Hartlebury, and the stretch to Kidderminster (1878) is newer than the original line (1864):

Enjoy your research foxy, but don't you find it takes the 'shine' off the journey knowing everything about it before you get there?

No... in fact it has always enhanced our trips, not stumbling onto grotty pubs. I find it fun to have a good rummage around an area using the Internet, and having a gander with the Google Street View Man. As with our last trip, when we actually get there, we see everything with our own eyes (and camera!), and the background info doesn't spoil the scene, saves time faffing about if I already know where the churches and shops are, and what the opening times are. We're not tied to a strict timetable, so can break it and pick it up later - we just have to be on time to get back to the airport. Have been looking up bell ringing towers in that area, looks like I can catch Wombourne for their Sunday Service, and Kinver for Wednesday practice evening.
Thanks to the Google Man I have found nice narrow lanes to cycle on, for a short afternoon trip around Market Drayton.
Feb-Mar trip is still a mystery what we'll do, something local around Stourbridge probably. I have had fun thinking about how we get back to the boat / Birmingham area and came up with 2 ideas: 1) Underground from Heathrow to Watford via Acton Town - Rayners Lane - Harrow-on-the-Hill. 2) To Paddington and train(s) to Stroud, overnight there B&B, next day on to the boat. Pirkko hasn't been on either of those routes yet (nor me).
Have already made a timetable for our Summer trip; we have 60 days to do a trip of 30 days, so one day driving, one day off. We have to find a week for blacking, a few days for cycling from Market Harborough to Grantham over the hills, and a week for walking the Pennine Way (unless my granddaughter is coming with us for those 10 weeks).
But kris and magnetman are right, I really must get on and start wrapping up Christmas presents and writing Christmas cards.

Can't be arsed to read it all, Foxy - but if you're on the S&W and you haven't been there already, you really MUST try the fish and chips at SWINDON - best in the southern half of the UK for the last too many years .....
Met x
p.s. don't know where the nearest Elsan is ...

I like spontaneity. Means you have to put up with some crappy stuff, but that just makes the good stuff better. But it wouldn't do for us all to be the same Rog ETA That chippy is pretty good Met

(Further edit - I meant the rigours of life - not Foxy's cassette situation!!!)

Yes, very irritating.
They removed the one at Autherley, and despite promises to relocate it, never have.
Also the one at the boat yard at Compton (now housing) disappeared too.
Not a great stretch for services, and not C&RT's finest hour either.
