Not sure what I think of this...on the one hand no-one should say no to any lifestyle choice, it seems they move every 2 weeks so fulfil CC..however one wonders how far being that one child in nursery and the other a toddler. I'm not sure its as cheap housing as the article may be wanting to portray as that looks an expensive fit out with stuff all made to measure. I don't think they were maybe as hard up as they made out..maybe bank of mum and dad assisted. Dunno about this article it brings up lot of questions ..'on a holiday back from Florida'..that'll be a quids in Disneyland jaunt....the whole article doesn't marry up and its uncomfortable read..no doubt typical Daily squall which I try to avoid

Why isn't the DHSS/DWP sticking all the illegal immigants on canal and river boats, if cheaper than housing on land?
After the trauma of the wars they've had to survive in Greece, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and France, what they could do with is being by water and the well-being that comes with it.
We are at war against Cheap Labour and Government Control.

Canals are a source of cheap housing. IF you can deal with living on a boat.
Seems like they can so good luck to them.
Of course there is a precedent for not needing to move so much during term time so it is a lot easier to deal with living aboard with kids and no home mooring than it was say 3 years ago.
I guess if the Mail are suggesting it there will be another large influx.
Plenty of space for everyone and its always good to get more enthusiasts about.
At the end of the day as there is no rent and they live on Oxfordshire which is quite an expensive area I expect the rent savings would pay for the boat in about 5 years.

Terrific to see young families on the water.
It's a tough life at this time of year, but good luck to them.
A wonderful lifestyle for the kids I would have thought.
It may or may not be financially cheaper, but they'll pay much, much more in effort.

I think, if you lived here, rather than just migrating occasionally, you'd know that we have places to house the illegal immigrants we catch. It's refugees that we house, and rightly so. Otherwise, there's nott enough room on the cut, what with it being filled with migrants and foreign brides already.

For migrants shouldn't that read ex-pats? As for the family in question, well a steep learning curve lies ahead, coming back to a freezing boat? they need to learn how to keep the fire in and no reason not to have a fridge and a freezer nor a washing machine, surely they are not always going to be able to pop round mum's to do the laundry. Still I wish them well. Phil

I've heard many an "ex-pat" in Spain denigrating migrants who work on the black, fiddle every tax liability they can etc, just like them in Spain.

In all seriousness, the difference is that British ex-pats don't paddle to Spain in rubber dinghies or travel there by hiding in lorry trailers.
Surely Jim you must realise that there is a distinction to be made between people who travel to another country to spend their life savings, and those who risk their lives in order to take advantage of the state benefits available in their target country?
As has been pointed out so many times (and I know you are going to stick your fingers in your ears at this point and say "lah, lah, lah, I can't hear you!"), France is a safe country.

'ex-pat' always makes me think of SunPat peanut butter. I would not describe myself as an 'ex-pat' as I have never been 'patriotic' towards Britain, not owning any land, and having absolutely no interest in waving the flag for when the parasitic Windsors drive past. And it makes you sound as if you used to be patriotic but aren't any more. Like the Monty Python ex-Parrot.
I do promote Britain and speak of it very warmly to foreigners, encouraging them to visit, because there are many great and wonderful things about the country - steam trains, so many different types of countryside, nice pubs, friendly people, double decker buses for the views, a good railway service with, fish 'n' chips shops, public footpaths everywhere, and canals. And potatoes in tins (Finns laugh about this one).
