While you lot are shivering back home though I'd give you an update from the southern hemisphere.
I usually stay in Kuta, which is the Balinese equivalent of Blackpool. Full of fat, beer swilling Australian bogans (read chavs). I decided on a change this year. The main reason was that my favourite surfing spot, Serangan island, has been closed to road traffic for some mega bucks 5 star development. Typical Bali this, tear down the coconut trees and little beachside shacks, threaten those who run them with guns if necessary, give them no compensation, then start building for rich Japanese/ Koreans who have no appreciation of the local culture. Quite sad really.
I'm at Sanur around 10 miles away which is also known as 'snore' because although it's a pretty big resort it couldn't be more different to Kuta. Full of coffin dodgers and families with just the odd surfer etc. Got myself a nice room for the month with all mod cons for about 150 quid, can't grumble. There's a nice but challenging surfing spot 5 miles away so I go there every morning on the bike. Can't claim to be mastering it, I've eaten sand more than a few times but I've caught a few waves and it's nice, less crowded than my usual spot and everyone is friendly, it's much less competitive.
Met this girl, Indra, as soon as I got here. She was OK at first but wouldn't leave me alone, it got to the point where she'd be waiting outside my room when I got back from surfing. No space at all, I'm used to living on my own. It started to do my head in to the point where it was a big relief if she ever left. Told her how I felt, best go our own ways, she didn't understand but there you go. Anyway, met this Austrian girl at the night market where I sometimes eat last night, date set for tomorrow, she lives here with her daughter, sounds more like it!
That's it for now.

Not jealous at all, it was a balmy -3 here yesterday and lots of lovely rain, sleet and snow forecast for the weekend. We first visited Koh Samui (Thailand) about 25 years ago. It was lovey, lots of little “secret beaches” and local villages. We went back a few times. But gradually, as you describe, coconut groves were replaced by concrete. Last time we went, which was about 10 years ago, it was unrecognisable. Shame. At least with Bali you probably don’t get too many obnoxious Russians. Good luck with the date.

Lots of Russians, they are everywhere now. Fortunately no Israelis, they are even more obnoxious than the Russians (yes, really!). They are banned, Indonesia doesn't recognise Israel, only Palestine.

Actually unless you surf I've no idea why anyone comes here, there are far nicer places in this part of the world. Thailand has some nice spots but has been similarly over developed and the people are nasty, the land of false smiles I call it. I wouldn't go there if you paid me. The gem is the Philippines, people only really go to Boracay which is an over developed shit hole and Palawan which was nice when I went there 9 years ago but was already starting to show the signs of too much tourism. Around and about though, if you have the time to travel a while to get somewhere, which I fortunately did, there are little eco resorts scattered around in the middle of nowhere that are just magical.
