It’s only been in recent years that I’ve managed to reach a point where I can just sit by the canal and take in my surroundings with the occasional chat to passers by.
The record so far is about 2 hours without resorting to my phone or feeling a need to ‘get on with something useful’.
It’s surprising how many passers by ask me why I haven’t got a fishing rod. I also rarely see people go for walks without a dog, it’s almost as if some need a reason to go for s walk.
When you look at animals like dogs and cats, they seem to be able to sit in silence for ages without needing to get up and do something. (maybe there is a clue there?).
Us humans in the ‘developed’ world do seem to spend a lot of our life time just trying to pay for food, water, shelter and security. How much time do we get to spend just appreciating nature?

How much time do we get to spend just appreciating nature? For me...
Too much, now I really must take the Mutt for a walk otherwise I'll be appreciating the downside of nature within the boat!

Are you sure it isn’t Mutt who is taking you for a walk?

I'm not in the mood for nature today, just seen that the roe deer have eaten my Swiss chard right down to ground level! Perhaps I should get a bow and arrow. Since moving up here 10 years ago they have increased in number - and confidence in coming near the houses. Spring must be on its way too, frogs gathering in the pond. Just cleared out the old leaves and detritus to leave room for spawn.

How much time do we get to spend just appreciating nature? I like standing on the back of the boat early in the morning or of an evening and listening to owls hooting or seeing the sun warm up the water and the mist rising. I think this would work much better having a pipe to puff away at, but the Witch will only moan at me getting mouth cancer and smelling bad. I don't smoke, but I do like the idea of having a pipe to light up once in a while. I'm often on the look out for photo angles, so do get to notice the countryside like that, too. Canal boating allows you to look at plants and animals as you go along, and where you moor up. There is nature all around you if only you are willing to poke about a bit. How many boaters here can identify trees and other plants beside the waterways?

I'm not in the mood for nature today, just seen that the roe deer... Why don't you set a trap and grab one, and have it as your pet? You could knit a jacket for it. And you could walk around with it on a lead, up to Stoodley Pike and back for walkies.

I spend lots of time wandering with phone off but most of the folks u see have headphones or phones in hand.....lots of runners ..veritable lycra clad army pounded past this am. I like to stop and watch the waves, didn't get Worms Head to-day, couldn't be bothered to get car out. Nature creates peace within and my daily wander important to me.

You set em up...... 😂😂😂😂 Jollity aside, yes I agree, I can identify a few of our fauna and flora. I'm also sensitive to the whiff of fox, which swmbo doesn't seem to be able to smell. Just ordered an electric fence off fleabay, keep those bastard deer at bay. I can't put a proper fence round cos it's common land between my fence and a small wood, I've commandeered about 20ft for veg, fruit trees and a woodpile, the Countryside Dept know but said not to fence it off.

Walking a deer on a string aside, there's an ancient track goes from Summit past Stoodley, I posted a pic a while back of the paved bridleway. That is only a couple of hundred years old though, the track is way older, part of The Long Causeway, a trading route from Cheshire to York and other northern places, it traverses the high ground where it can, above the boggy wet valleys.

Just seen a butterfly flying down the cut, is that normal for mid February? That butterfly wasn't stupid, it must have known that the canalwater was still much too cold to go for a swim . Peter.

I quite enjoy a good long walk, I often will go for a few days. if it's not a walk it's a long cycle with an overnight camp somewhere.
failing that as you know a nice wild camp in the middle of nowhere.

Just seen a butterfly flying down the cut, is that normal for mid February? apparently the mild weather has seen some come out early....suspect a sudden cold snap will see premature demise. There was frog spawn few weeks ago on the common
